Weird issue alert on Z77X-UD5H (Solution included)
« on: May 03, 2012, 12:43:02 am »
Bios version, F6. The same happens on the backup F4.

Here are the symptoms:

(Keep in mind that I have found the solution to this, odd as it was.)

1. Ram not running at spec. Inputting the correct values or using XMP resulted in boot failures. My 1600MHZ 8-8-8-24-2T DDR3 was running at 11-11-11-28-1T. Any other setting than this = boot failure (I haven't tried higher settings on the 11-11-11-28, inputting 2T=boot failure).

2. Impossibility to overclock my brand new 3770K (not even to a 36 multiplier). Changing every voltage (modeslty) and every power saving settings didn't work. I kept getting the boot failure message at anything but default values.

3. Then I noticed that my Bclock was at 98.??MHZ (I don't remember the exact decimals) according to Cpu-z. Since it was on AUTO, I tried to manually input 100MHZ in the Bios. Boot failure. At 100MHZ...

How I solved all this:

Desperate and tired (it was 3am), I tried to manually set the Bclock at 100.05MHz (random thought). The board booted. I tried XMP. Successful boot. The ram was running at advertised spec. I did a quick stress test, then I overclocked the CPU to 4.5Ghz (1.25Vcore, LLC turbo, etc.) Another slew of stress tests was enough to determine that my cooler wasn't up for more. The temps were around 78-82C.

Other notes:
Setting the Bclock to 100.20 worked just as well. I lack the cooler to go farther for now. I spent all my savings on this upgrade, so I'm broke. It was worth it though, my previous rig was an LGA775.

I haven't tried to put i back on Auto or 100MHZ since then, it seems pretty unstable in that state (I reinstalled windows after finding the solution to play it safe.)

I tried both sticks of ram in every slot of the board in every configuration possible, tried the backup Bios too. I messed around for 3 hours before finally striking gold randomly. Hopefully, this is a Bios issue and can be easily fixed.

Conclusion:
If Bclock= Auto or 100.00MHZ, sh*t happens (on my build).

My rig:
CPU:Intel core  i7-3770K
MB: Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H (Rev 1.0, Bios versions F6 and F4 (backup bios)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series (Model F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM) 1600MHZ 8-8-8-24-2T (8GB dual channel kit)
GPU: Sapphire HD 6850 1GB memory
Cooler: Coolermaster hyper 212+ with Tuniq Tx-2 TIM
OS drive: Crucial M4 128GB (000F firmware)
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit

Hopefully, this will be of some help to someone.

i think im having a similar problem:

1) i have 1600 mhz ram thats running at 1333. if xmp is enabled fails to boot, even
to bios. after clearing bios, will still fail to boot. to fix this i needed to remove the
ram totally then replace it and STRANGELY the system stabilizes. all memory tests
i can think of says the ram is fine.

2) changing voltages of any kind simply doesn't work

i haven't attempted your solution yet, as the system seems stable enough at 1333.
kinda waiting for gigabyte to provide a solution.

Hi

Well it sounds like both of you have found different solutiuons to similar problems. I would suggest trying a CMOS clear if it happens again or anyone else has the problem. As with anything like this though whatever works for you is good.

I cleared the cmos via the provided switch. I got a "Cmos is cleared messaged", but it didn't change a thing. I even used the switch on the southern part of the board to use the backup Bios (F4). The issue was still present. Auto settings on Bclock messed with everything.

Launtoc, if you ever feel like it, try to bump up the Bclock a little (100.05-100.4). If it doesn't work, that would mean that it is exclusive to my board/ram.

The way you cleared the CMOS is fine for some things but often not thorough enough to remove the problem.  For an extended clear I would recommend  this procedure.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery overnight or for at least six hours before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

its not just you, i can confirm your solution.

i changed the base clock to 100.05, then booted back to the bios. Then the effective clock in m.i.t changed to 100.90.

so i changed the base clock to 99.99 and the effective base clock in m.i.t =100.05.

i booted to windows and stress tested it in prime 95 with no issues.

so i then enabled xmp and stress tested again with success.

its currently running with a base clock of 99.99 (effective 100.05 in m.i.t) and my 1333 ram running at 1600.

thank you very much! +1thyrokio

I'll be sure to try that if I have any other problem. Since launtoc fixed his issue with my method though, wouldn't that mean that it's a Bios/Board problem?

And is there a specific reason why this method clears the Cmos more thoroughly? For example, I noticed that my profiles were still there when I cleared the Cmos via switch (I'm not 100% positive, but I seem to remember that happening). Would they disappear if I drained the remaining power out of the unplugged PSU and left the bios battery our overnight?

i would be curious to see if anyone with a sandy bridge cpu has this problem.

another update on this issue:

when changing the cpu multiplier to 45 everything is stable in prime95, @60 c under full load.
when changing it to 47 i get boot failures. after checking my voltages and comparing with others,
i noticed that the bclock had changed yet again to 99.89.

i must admit i am new to overclocking and the bclock values in m.i.t might not be 100% accurate.
but it does seem like the most obvious cause of the problem. i feel as though this is a bios issue that
really need some support from gigabyte.

Yes and I would agree that in this instance it does seem to be a BIOS issue. Have any of you yet contacted GGTS to say this and see what they can offer by way of a solution ?

If you haven't then you can contact them here :

Sorry for the double post. I just wanted to say that Gigabyte posted the new F7 bios, which fixes the problem for me.

This may be my problem as well:

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,8956.0.html

The only question I have is in my setup I'm running the i7-3770 not the K model. Would it still be safe for me to try changing the bclock from auto settings? It sounds like it may be a RAM issue. I'm running Corsair Vengenance at 1600 mhz. Maybe that my problem. I will see tonight. So is it safe?

Re: Weird issue alert on Z77X-UD5H (Solution included)
« Reply #14 on: May 12, 2012, 01:34:00 am »
First of all, the only differences between the 3770 and the 3770k are the fact that the 3770K's multiplier is unlocked and that it's default multi is 35 instead of 34. Also, the K version lacks VT-D, vPro and intel trusted execution technology.

Meaning that overclocking the base clock by 0.05% to 0.1% is fine on both processors (using 100.05MHZ as base clock). Both could probably handle a 105-107 base clock if you push it, but it's not the recommended way to overclock, since the base clock affects the whole system.

Using 100.05-100.2 is in no way harmful, you could probably go up to 100.6 with no problems, though I haven't tried it personally.

As for your issue, when you say that it doesn't post, do you mean that you don't hear the delightful little "BEEP" indicating that the board successfully passed it's Power On Self Test (aka POST)?

Your reply makes me think that you can enter the Bios to update it, or change the base clock. If that's the case, that would mean that the board successfully POSTs, since you can only enter the Bios after it does so.

To hear any beeps, a system speaker must be plugged in.

Regarding the clicking sound coming from the Z77 chipset, I have no idea how it could possibly produce such a sound. I know that coils can produce sounds, but a chipset? This sounds pretty alarming.

If you can't even enter the Bios, you can try the switch to change the Bios to the backup Bios, since there's two Bios chips on the board. (Sorry for the repetitive use of the "B" word, I lack synonyms.)

If nothing works, you can try contacting the GGTS, using Dark Mantis's links from an earlier reply of this thread.

Still, keep us up to date on your progress if you can.
