Mouse freezes when logging out of internet
« on: June 10, 2012, 08:11:23 am »
This has only just happened in the past week, whenever I log out of 'Windows Live' my mouse freezes for about 10 seconds, also been having trouble with Yahoo mail login, & Google I had about 3 goes, then did a hot boot & all was okay, but then the next time I log on the problem starts all over again.

Any suggestions?

Ben.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ben

The first thing I would do is to see what was running at the time the problem occurs. Check in Task Manager and Resource Monitor and see if they can help you track down what is causing it.

Failing that try cleaning out all of the "crap" from the temp folders, caches, cookies, etc

Hi DM

Looks like I have everything running, except the kitchen sink, so far I think it might be a small app that I loaded app a week ago, have disabled it so will see if the problem returns.

Then I will re-enable it & see if it does it again.

Running task manager it says my CPU is at 1% - 5% usage. 41% max Frequency. (whatever that means).

Disk; I/O bounces from 0 kb to 300kb/sec, with 1% Highest active time.

Memory; 0 hard faults/sec, 13% used physical memory.

Will give it a while then re- run with the app & see what happens.

I am amazed at all the programs that are running in the background I have never really bothered with this before, might go through them & see what programs I can turn off that are not really needed.

Thanks DM.

Looks like DPC latency issue.

Use this tool while recreating the scenario http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
Post a screen-shot.

DPC problems can caused by the BIOS ,BIOS settings ,drivers ,malware ,antivirus/firewall software

When I tried to send a picture my system shut down again,so this is my second go.
Have removed my scanner, web cam, microphone from the usb ports to see if this helps also.

Ben

PS; when I again logged out of "Windows Live Messenger" the mouse froze for a few seconds, also when I used "Cyberlink Power Director 10" to copy a video file to a dvd the computer froze & then restarted, I then tried the same thing again but all was okay?????

Have run a quick virus/malware scan using MSE, Malwarebytes, & PC Tools, all came back clean. (just in case).

You have some noise there. You should have a green imaginary line there. It doesnt hit the red wall ,but still.

Was the picture taken while idle ?!

You should try first and disable in BIOS CPU states like C1 or whatver has Intel in this aspect.
On AMD systems the C1 state beeing enabled gets the latency high.

Also update chipset drivers and SATA controller ones.

Disable in BIOS the on board sound and or network card and see what happens with the yellow spikes in that scenario.Try a discrete network card as well.

LE:Are you having mixed memory modules ?!

Looking at your graph there I would say it isn't down to latency unless there are much higher peaks not shown. Try running it and leave it running and then using a few programs before checking it again.

You could try disabling everything but the basics and see if it still occurs. If it doesn't then you can add one thing at a time and test.

Have removed some start up programs that were running even though I no longer use them.

So will see how I get on from there, picture was taken while idle, but the graph was the same all the way through.

Okay just ran it again & got some heavy red peaks, disabled PC Tools, this dropped it down a little bit, then I disabled malwarebytes this brought it back to normal.

Thanks again all.

Ben.

PS. Just ran it again, found out the culprit was "Malwarebytes" (as PC tools made no big a difference) as soon as I loaded it back the peaks hit red again.

So the million $ question is do I keep this program running in the background (as it only does this occasionally)  or disable it  when I am on the internet?

Is there much difference between PC tools threatfire & Malwarebytes for protection?

1.Do NOT use 2 antivirus products with real time protection.
2.Do NOT use a HIPS (Threatfire ) along a 3-rd party real time antivirus ,use an antivirus suite with build in HIPS if necesary.

They will never make them work together it s competition.

Then there is W7 x64 kernel patches that makes HIPS useless as they can t really do their job properly.
Most of the time a HIPS will generate more problems than protection ,data corruption is one of  them ,BSOD-s another.
I m using AVG /Avast + Malwarebytes free (no real time protection).
If you want bad IP s blocked use something like peerblock

There is really no need of an expensive/payed antivirus as long as you know what you are doing.
If you want safe browsing add a sandbox program like Sandboxie or use the Avast sandbox feature.
If you want to avoid USB autorun infections turn off autorun.

Windows 7 also gives you free access to the Microsoft antivirus ,test it.Never run along it another AV with realtime protection as well.

Yes I would agree with Vezina. Never have two or more antivirus programs running on the same system as they will always conflict and give you problems. Unlike him I do like pay for options though. I tend to use KIS (Kaspersky Internet Security) as I tend to use the 3 computers for a year option and pay around £15 normally. This will give you all you require in one package with the guarantee that they will all work together well. At a fiver a system it is money well spent. ;)

Well so far it has been behaving itself, though I did remove a few start up programs, so I am hoping that this was the general cause.

Will keep you informed if it happens again.

Thanks all for your help.

Malwarebytes doesnt have real time protection, or should I say last time I checked it didnt? Then again I havent checked for a while, and have always used the free version with no issues

Hi 'cchaos'

I have the paid for Pro version of Malwarebytes with active scanning.

Every time I log on it updates itself.

I have all virus/malware nukers running & so far all is well. So it must have been a redundant program that would come on in the background, as I deleted them & everything seems okay.

Thanks.
