GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 Unknown Device USB Port#/HUB# 7/4.
« on: August 11, 2012, 08:12:04 pm »
Hello,

For a while now i have had a "unknown device" listed in Device Manager (Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1).
I have installed all possible drivers for my motherboard (GA-Z68X-UD7-B3), but nothing seems to help.

I am 99.99% sure that it is an onboard device, since I have already tried:
- Opening up Device Manager followed by unplugging all external devices from the PC.
- Booting the PC with only the mouse connected.
- Booting the PC with only the keyboard connected.
Whichever I do, the 'unknown device' continues to be recognized by Windows.

After some Googling I've seen about 3 or 4 others who have encountered the same problem with this motherboard, unfortunately, all of these topics were unanswered as well.

Here's a screenshot (clickable):

I know quite a few tricks to get information for unknown devices, but Windows Device Manager, AIDA64, Everest Ultimate and Device Doctor all come up empty on this specific device. Also I can not look up the VENDORID / DEVICEID in device manager so i could follow it up by searching here.

I hope someone can help me here!  ???

Hi

Hi there,

Thanks for your swift response. I just downloaded "MEI_allOS_8.1.0.1248_1.5M_PV.exe" (the latest version i could find).
This had no effect on the unknown device unfortunatly.
All of the HUBs are installed correctly (2 x Renesas USB 3.0 and the rest Intel) by use of the Gigabyte CD (and i even searched for the latest version of the Renesas drivers manually).

So no luck with both i'm affraid. Any other ideas perhaps? :)

Try removing the device totally. The system will then go through the procedure of finding it again and might get it right this time. It doesn't always work but worth a try.

Make sure that you have the latest instance of all System Management drivers. I have attached the screenie of my system for help although yours will no doubt be different.

Hey,

Thanks again though i'm affraid that didn't work either.
My list of System devices seems to be somewhat more extended by the way (see attachment).

Any other ideas? :)

Hi again,

Your list is somewhat longer than mine probably because I had only recently done a clean instal on the machine, so it is fairly basic. All I can suggest is that firstly you make a slist of every bit of hardware you have in your system and then make sure it is on the list. The second suggestion involves the use of a chainsaw....  Seriously you could try doing a reinstall of the OS.

Hey,

Thanks for all your advice. Reinstalling windows is usually considered not an option by me since that never exposes the cause of a problem (the fact that  i use a lot of different software configured for different applications/hobbies would make it an extremely daunting task as well).

Today i hooked up another device to my external USB HUB. This is a powered 7 port Hub. The minute i hooked up the new device, my 'unknown device' problem dissapeared completely!
This is very strange to say the least, since i disconnected all devices from my PC while troubleshooting in an earlier stage (including this entire Hub) to exclude such a problem and the problem was still present back then.

I have however seen an issue before (with several people) where even a powered Hub which had too many devices hooked up to it will fail to install one of the devices correctly resulting in this exact error.

Nonetheless, problem solved. :)

Alright...

Looks like the problem i had with the Unknown Device / USB Hub came back again.
I tried following this guide as well: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/165554-usb-driver-general-fix-problems.html
It was quite handy for cleaning devices from my Windows driver cache which were no longer present or no longer used.

Concerning my Hub issue(s) though...i'm beginning to think one of the USB controllers has become faulty and is therefore no longer working.

Oh well... i guess an excuse like this was all i needed to upgrade to Ivy Bridge anyway (whilst i get the motherboard RMA'ed in the meantime). :)
