Flash BIOS with unsupported CPU?

Flash BIOS with unsupported CPU?
« on: September 15, 2012, 07:20:03 pm »
How can I flash my BIOS if I don´t get past POST? I get a AF error on the LED-display.
I got a new out of the box
 X79-UD7 with a 3820CPU installed.

I suppose it is my CPU that is unsupported couse I´ve tried different MEM and GPU...

thx

Have you tried to boot with just one memory module installed? The board does support that CPU, just wondering what Bios Version you have installed. You can take out the CPU and check to make sure there are no bent pins, check the pads on the CPU and make sure all the pins are making good contact.
Also try removing the battery from the board for an hour or so the clear out the bios. Then try again, if you manage to get into Bios (use a PS2 keyboard) set to load optimised defaults and then apply your settings for ram and voltages etc.
If no luck take the board out of the case and try on a cardboard box or similar to eliminate possible shorting and try again....

You could list your hardware components  please so we can help you better.

Hello Fatman
Yes I´ve tried with just one RAM installed, in both a orange and a black slot. No difference. According to Gigabyte this CPU is supported after BIOS F9 and I don´t know my BIOSs version. I´ve tried to reset BIOS, to take out the battery (witch is out and waiting now), different GPUs, I tried to boot with a PS2 keyboard. Right now all I´ve connected is the RAM, GPU, CPU and a keyboard and I´ve allready tried to take it out of my case and put it on a magasine....

I really don´t like to remove the CPU but I can try, I was carefull when i installed it but you don´t know.

My setup is:
Gigabye x79 UD7
Intel 3820
Crusial Ballistix Elite 4x8GB RAM
Corsair H100 CPU cooler
Gigabyte 460 GPU (x2)

So, I've removed the CPU and looked at the pins. They all looks to be in order, all shiny and fine... Nothing on the CPU either. No change when when I installed it again and tried to boot. Still AF on the led.

Very strange.......Have you made sure you have the CPU power leads connected to the board? Not just the 24 pin

Hi

I would think that the most likely problem is that your board doesn't have the BIOS late enough to support your CPU. To cure this you will have to either beg, borrow or steal a supported processor just the flash the BIOS or take the board to a local store where they can do it for you for a small charge.

Please post what power supply you are using too.

You can see the supported CPUs here and the bios available for your board.

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4047#

But it shows your cpu is supported if its the same revision#.
Double check that on the lower left corner of the motherboard.
