Memory RMA returns
« on: March 03, 2013, 01:30:26 pm »
I am about to get back memory from an RMA based on memtest86 results.
Should I run the memtest 86 on this new memory once install or trust that it correct?

Which it should be but then the originals showed errors?
I only tested because i had an odd reset to optimized settings in my bios.

Or should I just run the pc and test if I get similar issues?

Always test memory modules with MemTest86.
Also on X79 and Z77 motherboards with Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge-E CPUs MemTest86 4.x just don't work and freeze or halt with exceptions.
So using MemTest86 3.5b is the safest thing to do.

It might not be memory problem. Did you try the memory on a different MB or try differnet memory on that board?

In almost 20 yrs building computer I have only had one stick of memory go bad. That is DDR memory.

Some memory and MB just don't like each sometimes.

If you never tested RAM with MemTest86 you wouldn't know if they were defective or not.
I found plenty of RAM modules DDR,DDR2,DDR3 that either were defective or became defective after 12-24hours of MemTest86 running.
All known brands, Corsair, Kingston, Geil.. just to name a few.
Always test RAM modules for no less than 6 hours with MemTest86 before even trying wasting time installing any OS.

If you have a bad modules you are going to know it.

Working with a bad module, defective RAM means wasting time and losing data.
A defective module causes corruption in RAM, not always freezes and BSODs.
I had checked systems that seemed working perfectly but there was some weird file corruption going on. The machines were up and running in, it happened in more than one office environment different places, the employees were using the machines like everything was good because they never got a freeze nor a BSOD.
But they started getting corrupted files, only big files usually got corrupted.
Well, I did a MemTest86 on those machines everytime and I always found defective RAM modules. Windows wasn't running in the defective chips area, so it kept running although then checking further revealed that OS files and system registry started getting corrupted too but no BSOD happened.
This behaviour happened multiple times on different machines in more than one office.
It's pretty common to find PCs with bad RAM modules and that happens because the ones assembling the system first and then the ones that should provide assistance inside an office to employees didn't bother using MemTest86 (or a similar reliable memory tester) to ensure that RAM modules were defective free and fully stable.
And it happens on PCs for SOHO too, not just large office environments.
I keep repeating to anyone to always check RAM on whatever system you assemble or you need to provide assistance for.
Checking RAM avoids further issues, data corruption and lost installations.

Try running a bad stick of memory on gaming machine see what happens.

Plus most of the computers that run in a office environment are the lower end computer junk.  ;)

I just had a computer a eMachine that would not reboot. You had to turn off the power and than turn it back on.

Then it would boot back into windows. BSOD when she watch a video I change memory in it and without memtest 86.

Took out the junk memory and put in good memory and the girl has not had any more problems.

You have your way of doing it and I have mine that has work for me for almost 20yrs.

Plus if the op wants to test his new memory that is up to him. I have no problem with that.

Your way of doing is to ensure wasting time yourself and on your customers. Putting their machines and more or less precious data at risk.

It took me about 2 mins to figure that out and what you run your test for a min of 6 hrs.  ???

Plus I put Zerowing into the google search box and get nothing.   :-\

I put dmdilks into the google search box and get about 26 page.  :o

If you think I'm wasting my time that is fine I'm a big boy I can handle that.  ;D

Plus lets get back to what the OP wanted in the first place should he run the memtest again?

That is up to him if he feels that he should run it again. I yes and hope everything works out.

You must be a little kid. Indeed.

Claiming your nickname as proof of your knowledge based on how many sites on Google pop up when searching your nickname it's beyond silly. Absolutely childish.

How old are you kid ? 15 ?

Memory replaced and running memtest 86 for last 6 hours its onpass 4 at teh moment towards the end and so far no issues Temp of ram has climbed from 14c to now 23 .5
It will reach about 35c max it tends to max out depending on the ambient room temp and only reaches this if run continuously like in this test.
it was cold this morning.
With normal Room temp 21c ram temp normally maxes out at 30c

Cpu I7/3770K maxes out at about this as a well 29c

Will now leave running for another couple of hours before I resume the finish of this build.

Must admit very impressed with the cool running my other I7/930 PC runs in the 60c range?
