Gigabyte EP45-UD3P RAM question

I think I have bad ram after the windows memory diagnostic tells me I have hardware problems.  I was advised to use memtest to check each RAM stick.  The problem is my computer doesn't boot when I only use 1 stick so I can't run memtest.  I have so far been using 2 sticks in the 1st and 3rd yellow slots.  The red slots 2 and 4  don't seem to allow me to boot.  When I boot up with 2 sticks, the computer does recognize the 4 gigs of ram.

Boot it with both sticks and check it that way should work.

Have you got the latest bios and set the correct Voltages for your memory? With Memtest check 2 sticks at a time in slots 1 and 3 and then if that is good check the other two in slots 1 and 3. If you can run memtest though 10 passes for both lots without error then I would say your ram is ok. You may have a bad ram slot. You might have to up the voltages slightly on the MCH CORE from 1.1 to 1.2 and disable XMP.
