Gigabyte GA-970a-UD3 ram compatibility question
« on: February 26, 2016, 06:55:02 pm »
Hi

I have a question about whether my RAM is compatible with my Gigabyte GA-970a-UD3 as I have recently upgraded my computer and now suffer random reboots so wondering if it could be a ram issue.

I had before upgrade 2x4GB 1333MHz memory and now I have upgraded to 2x8GB of 1600MHz memory. The other upgrade beside RAM is that I replaced my AMD FX 6100 with a AMD FX 8350, don't know if that could be a issue.

Anyways I have been trying to troubleshoot by looking first at the temperatures thinking it could be a overheating issue but these are fine, my cpu is at like 40-45c during load (like gaming) and my gpu is at like 50-60c. I have also tested both my harddrives with SeaTools (DOS version) and they both pass so no issues there. So I am thinking its either a power issue or faulty or incompatible/bad RAM.

Here is my setup:

PSU: Corsair TX 750W
GPU: Sapphire Radeon R9 280 Dual-X OC
Processor: AMD FX 8350 Black Edition
CPU cooling: Noctua NH-D15
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970a-UD3
New RAM: Crucial DDR3 BallistiX Sport 16GB KIT, modelnumber: BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00CEU

At the moment I have my old RAM installed and so far no reboot but they are kinda sudden so don't know if the issue is resolved or not. Anyways hope for some help. Thanks :)

No overclock? if yes reset to all default/auto first

Memtest86+ runs flawless at least 2 laps?
IntelBurnTestV2.exe (max setting) good for 10 laps? (yes, it works fine with AMD)

Hi

Thanks for the reply.
I got no overclock so no need to reset I guess.

Memtest86+ detected no errors on the ram (two passes) when I runned them individually (one stick at a time in different slots) and also when I ran them together.

Haven't tried IntelburnTestV2 yet so I will try that when I get home. I have now been using my old memory (2x4 GB 1333Mhz) for a couple of days and no reboot with these, so I am thinking something is up with that new memory sticks.

Hi

Ok so I just tested IntelBurnTestV2 first with my old memory stick and these passed without any issues (even passed high) however with the new memory I was able pass the standard test once and then when I put it on high the computer shut down and rebooted after only 17 seconds.

Then when I got back into Windows and tested again on standard, this time just trying out the two other (blue slots) on my board the computer shut down and rebooted in like 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

So I am inclined to believe this is a RAM issue.
But again memtest86+ does not show any errors on them.

Anything I can do like increase voltage or something in BIOS?

Best Regards

Did you reset/flush the BIOS after installing the new CPU? try this first!
Have you installed the OS fresh or just swapped CPU/Ram hoping it works out as is?

What's the CPU temp while running IntelBurn? - should not exceed 60C core temp

Would be the quickest/easiest to switch to another ram brand and see if that works stable.
The Ballistics ram is not listed as approved for your board - I would stick to the brands listed in the memory support list. Corsair, Geil, Kingston would be fine.

When the bios is on all auto there is no need for manual adjustments as the mobo is doing it itself.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

The only thing I did before installing the new CPU was that when using the old FX 6100 I flashed BIOS to version F7 using q-flash from F5 as F7 or higher was required for the new CPU according to the CPU list for this motherboard.

As for the temps running IntelBurn the maximum I saw my CPU hit was 42C. I have not tried a fresh OS install, all I did was add the new CPU and replace the RAM.

I could always try a fresh OS install just to see if that helps but when running on my old memory 2x4 GB it seems to be running stable so don't know if that would help. BIOS is set on auto so guess I don't have to worry about that.

I think for now I am just going to stick to using the old 2x4 GB of memory as at the moment 8GB of memory is enough for what I use the computer for, which is mostly gaming and it seems to run stable enough with these sticks.

I will see if I can get some replacement memory from the store I bought these Ballistick sticks from. Anyways thanks for the help :)
