GA-MA78GM-S2H hdmi to television problem
« on: March 21, 2009, 10:31:23 am »
I bought a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard (Rev 2.0) that I'm now using in a mediacenter pc. The problem is that when I connect the pc to the television using hdmi I can only use a resolution of maximum 800X600 (all higher resolutions, tried on different refreshmodes etc., don't work). I just get a blue screen on the television which means it gets no (recognizable) input. I can however get a 1360X768 resolution on the screen but by using the VGA-out (my television has a VGA-in).
I've googled a lot about this, and I found other people having the same problem (with the same motherboard but with different televisions!), but I have not found a descent solution yet.
I have already tried to update motherboarddrivers and the ATI Catalyst, but without result.

Gigabyte promised me onboard full HD, so I hope they can keep their promises.

The stuff:
Motherboard: GA-MA78GM-S2H (Rev 2.0) - HD3200 Graphics onboard
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450 2.1Ghz Boxed
Memory: Kingston 2X2Gb 1066Mhz CL5
Television: Toshiba Regza 42XV555D (Full HD)

Thanks in advance for every help and suggestion.

Hi m00se

give a try with latest motherboard bios ver. FCa:
http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_DownloadFile.aspx?FileType=BIOS&FileID=14481

What OS do you use? What is version of your ATI vga driver?

I updated the bios using the @BIOS utility and that worked fine, but sadly the problem remains exactly the same.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. The ATI driver is Catalyst 9.2 (recent).

Thanks

Try updating to 9.4 to see if that helps, ATi occassionally has driver issues.

I just updated to 9.4, restarted and tried everything again from the beginning. The problem stays exactly the same: only image on maximum 800*600.

I'm starting to think my motherboard and my television just don't like eachother, but I'm still hoping this can be solved because the main reason I bought this motherboard is the FullHD over HDMI.

Thanks, I will try this. But can I thrust this bios? It doesn't seem to be a version you can find on the Gigabyte website.

Could be a beta BIOS which fixes this known issue, I would trust it considering Gigabyte gave it to you :P

I tried the T6F using Qflash, but I get "BIOS ID check error"

I tried with two different USB-sticks and I tried formatting under FAT32 and FAT16, but everytime I got the same error.

Thanks

i see, this means bios does not fit to your mobo, maybe it's different revisions problem. so in such case you can try with another bios ver. FCc

p.s. pendrive should have FAT16.

I did the FCc update succesfully. The result: no 1920*1080, but also I lost the 800*600 and smaller resolutions. I did put the output on D-Sub/HDMI in Bios, but strangly the Catalyst driver now has a tab called "DTV (DVI)". This used to be "DTV (HDMI)" which makes more sense.

So I can get no image at all using HDMI anymore, however Catalyst does still see the screen as a "Toshiba TV" (which is correct).

I also tried starting up without the HDMI cable plugged in, and then the "DTV (DVI)" tab is gone and Catalyst also doesn't report the "Toshiba TV" anymore, so this means the pc still detects the TV.

hello m00se

there is no update yet as AMD/ATI engineers can't find this TV at their area for testing.
so could you test your mobo with different TV brand / model in the meantime ?
and have a look at these forums:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=992503
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/988448.html
there are some solutions mentioned.

i will try to push from my side also for duplicating the problem if possible.

I just gave up and ordered myself a GeForce GTS250... (Sorry, not from Gigabyte because I could get one from XFX at a very nice price).

This time I did my homework. I wanted an Ati HD4850, but according to what I read on internetfora the Toshiba televisions just don't work with any Ati-card over HDMI. Nvidea cards should be no problem.

@ runn3R: thanks a lot for the help anyway
