Will Not Restart
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:43:17 am »
Hello,
This is the first time here so please bare with me and excuse my ignorance but, I bought a barebone kit which consisted of, Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H AMD 880G Socket AM3 MB.. AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8Ghz CPU ..CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB DDR3 PC10666 1333MHZ ...WD Caviar Green 1TB 64MB/SATA-3G ..Ultra LSP750 750w Power Supply ..Ultra XBlaster Mid-Tower Case Black ..to which I added...EVGA GeForce GT 220 1GB DDR2 w/DVI/VGA/HDMI PCIe ...Lite On 4X Blu Ray ROM SATA OEM ..Sony Optiarc 24X DVDRW SATA OEM ...

Upon assembly of the machine, installing Windows 7 Ultimate, then downloading updates, Microsoft says the machine needs to be Re-Started as is the norm. BUT, when I tell it okay to Re-Start the machine shuts down, turns Monitor off and just sits there. The only way I can get the machine to come back to life is by depressing the Power Button to turn it off wait just a short bit 10 seconds maybe then Pressing the Power Button. I ask Gigabyte tech support about it and finally after about 6 weeks they decide I need a RMA to send it back to them so they can check it out on the Bench.

So I went to the site the link they gave me for an RMA and read the Policy, it said the average turn around time was, two to three, days I'm thinking isn't bad but it was/is Business Weeks. Can't do without a machine that long so I calls Tiger Direct and get the same MOBO sent to me. Upon swapping them out I fire the thing up thinking oh Boy, No Sir went to Start menu hit the Re-Start button, same thing. Now there has to be something I'm missing. I know I'm rambling on but want you to be abreast of all I've done.

Can anyone help and old retired over the road trucker, who's dumber than a sack of rocks? I'm at a total lose. It's got to be something simple. any input, help in any manner, ideas thoughts anything will be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,

Has to be something in windows as it loaded it fine and all parts originally worked. Do updates 1 at a time until you find the one that is causing trouble. I think you have ruled out motherboard as the 2nd one is doing the same thing.

I'm not so sure that it's Windows, of course I'm not sure it isn't but, the machine from day one has never Re-Started. I will do a Safe Mode Start up and see what happens. I've already tried taking the video care out like I was ask to do. Thank You for your timely and kind reply.

Hi there,

A couple of questions I'm afraid:

What Revision Number is your Motherboard?
What BIOS version are you running?
Have you changed any of the BIOS settings?

OK, OK, I know that is more than a couple of questions but, if you could post back with the answers to them, it would really help.

Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Go into the BIOS and set a HDD delay of 5 seconds to give the drive time to initialise.

I have the exact same barebone system that you do except I replaced the Corsair Memory with Kingston because I heard the system what hinkey with the Corsair. Any way I have the same problem. I tested the start switch, It was fine, I then jumpered the start switch on the motherboard, no luck. I then jumpered the start lines on the power supply start lines. It started right up. This proves to me that the motherboard is at fault. I don't know if I should post this seperately or as a response to you. Sorry if I may be wrong. If anyone from Gigabyte reads this, please let me know.

Hi and welcome to the forum. This seems to be the  correct place to post your thoughts on the matter as it is all the same problem. Just because the PSU is not the problem doesn't necessarily mean that the motherboard is. It could be down to many things.

And what "many things" could you suggest I check.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Well first can you list your hardware so we have a better idea of what the problem could be? I know that you have a similar setup to the OP but need details.

I would suggest that if you have the Western Digital Green hard drive also that you try what I suggested to the OP which was to go into the BIOS and set a HDD delay of 5 seconds to give the drive time to initialise. Please let us know what processor you are running also.

Sorry, I guess I left that out. It is a AMD Phenom II 1055T 6 Core.
I will certainly try the delay, but just for my info, How does the bios matter if there is no power to the MOBO? The only way I can get power to the system is by jumping the start lines (green and black) wires on the PSU connector.

I'm sorry maybe I misunderstood your problem. I thought that when you pressed the reset button it was just hanging not that there wasn't any power at all. My bad. In that case I would agree that it is a problem with the motherboard.

Thanx,

I guess I have to get it swapped. It's only 4 days old. I'm not sure if I contact Gigabyte or Tiger Direct, but I'll find out.

Thanks again

Normally you would get it replaced by your retailer for the first 12 months and then Gigabyte after that. I don't think there is anything stopping you going direct to Gigabyte though if you prefer.
