880GM-UD2H - Problem using two RAM sticks
« on: September 26, 2010, 07:35:23 pm »
Hello all,

I have the following problem with my system: When I use one of two RAM sticks (either one), it works fine. But when I use both of them together, my system won't even show the very first screen to access the BIOS. It crashes with a number of long beeps (usualy 4) and then restarts and the same thing happens again. If I insist on restarting it will occasionaly load windows but as you can imagine this is not good enough.

Until now I have done the following:
-Updated to the latest BIOS
-Run Memcheck for each stick individualy - OK
-Run Memcheck for both of them together - OK
-Tried both light blue and white RAM slots
-4 long beeps could have meant that the CPU fan is not installed correctly (as I saw in a forum), but this doesn't seem to be the case as with only one stick it works fine.

My system is:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H
RAM:Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1333C8 1333 MHz 4GB (2x2GB)
Hard Disk: Seagate Barracuda 500GB

So I don't really know where to go from here... any ideas please? Thanks

What graphics card are you using because 4 or more long beeps could be GPU problem? The other thing is a power problem but you haven't listed your PSU either.

Yes, sorry, my PSU is a CHIEFTEC GPS-450A and I am using the onboard graphics card

Well bearing in mind that you are using the onboard graphics I expect the PSU is powerful enough although the manual does recommend at least 500W. So unless you have a lot of fans and drives etc it should be ok. Are you using the stock CPU cooler? Have you checked that your memory is on the QVL for this motherboard?

It's a fairly simply system so I am also assuming that 450W are ok. Yes, I am using the stock CPU cooler, and no, the memory is not in the QVL.. you think it might be that? Anything else worth checking or doing before I take the memory back?

Have you checked both the QVL for the motherboard and the QVL of the memory manufacturers? If it is on either it should be ok.

I checked the QVL of the memory manufacturers as well, and it doesn't seem to be supported... :(

In that case you might still get away with using it but you are going to require a lot of skill to be able to play around with all the settings to get it to work. It would be much easier to swap it out for some compatible memory if possible. ;)

Have you also updated to the latest BIOS and all that? Unfortunately I haven't had the time to take it back to the shop to check it for me, and I don't have the cash to spend on new QVL sticks... so I am now still working with one stick... Please let me know if you come across anything interesting on this

 880GM-UD2H rev 1.3
amd athlon 2 x4 635
vga geforce gts 450
ram1: patriot sector 5 1333 7-7-7-20 1.65 V 2x2GB

Hi there,

like the OP your RAM doesn't seem to be on the QVL for your motherboard. http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_ga-880gm-ud2h.pdf

However, I'm not sure that this should stop it from running in Dual Channel Mode and I am looking into other possible causes. I will post back when I have some more information, so please be patient as it might take a couple of days.

In the meantime, what BIOS version are you running. If it is the original version that shipped with the board you might want to try the update F7 and see if that helps. You can get that here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3475&dl=1#bios

Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.
