GA-X58A-UD3R rev2 won't fully power on w 8 pin power plugged in

Hi,

I'm doing a new build with the following components:
MB: GA-X58A-UD3R rev 2.0
BIOS: whatever it shipped with
Intel i7 950
12 GB Gskill DDR3-1600
80GB intel SSD / 1 sata 3 data drive
850 Watt corsair power supply (have also tried with another power supply)

If I only plug the main 24 pin power connector into the MB, it will power on to the point where all the fans start up, but it never beeps or pushes anything to the screen (2 rows of leds light up also.

If I also plug in the 8 pin power connector, when I turn it on the fans don't on turn on at all, and and only 2 leds, 1 green and one orange light up.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum

Sounds like you have a problem there. The board wont work without the 8 pin 12v connection. The minimum you need to boot is motherboard/cpu/heatsink/fan/one stick of RAM and PSU. With these items it should try and POST. You will need a buzzer attached to be able to hear the BIOS beeps. I think you may have a short to earth there somewhere. Remove all the cables apart from the ones to the motherboard from the PSU and leave the rest as I said and then try and boot. lease post what beeps are emitted.

Thanks for the quick help, problem fixed.

When i removed the MB from the case to set on the anti static bag I noticed that the 8 pin connector was only half in.  Everything is working now.

Oh well that's good news. For future reference if you go to build the system up outside the case do not place it on the anti-static bag as it will just short out the board. Use cardboard or something else non conductive.

Just dropped in here to leave a big +1 on the "Do not place motherboard on the outside of the anti-static bag"

Those bags are designed to move static from the inside to the outside of the bag, so any static built up in the bag would be moved to the outside of the bag.

Just to add to what Lsdmeasap has just said the anti- static bags are also conductive by nature. Not a good place to put your motherboard when powered up with all those solder connections sticking out the back
