GA-X58A-UD3R USB3 ports not working
« on: October 27, 2010, 11:03:37 am »
Hi guys.  I have a kind of similar problem to:

Topic: GA-X58A-UD3R USB Ports Not Working - 3 Month Old High End Build
http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,3250.0.html

I recently bought a Western Digital MyBook 3 external USB3 drive but cannot get it to work when plugged in to a USB3 port.

It WILL work when connected to a USB2 port but obviously at a lower speed.  I've so far tried the following:

1 Checked that USB3 ports are enabled.
2 Updated the USB3 NEC drivers to the latest version.
3 Updated the latest firmware to FB, because there are some USB3 effects.

Unfortunately I do not have another PC or another USB3 device to allow me to test the motherboard and the hard drive but if anyone has some idea of where to go next I'd appreciate hearing from them.  Thanks.

Hi
Well in the past there have been several instances of the cable being the problem often I think regarding the disatnce the metal connection protruded from the plastic shroud so I think that would be worth checking first. Also of course the fact that the cable is functional.

Here is another thread that sprung to mind that you might want to read through:

That's interesting because there IS some sort of response.  The drive spins up the moment the USB cable is connected, but I cannot hear the familiar connection sound.  It does suggest a possibility there may be a problem with the cable.

I do not have second cable to test, but I have now found someone with a USB3-enabled PC.  It will take a couple of days maybe but they can try the drive, together with its cable.

Before that, I'll try holding the connectors more firmly in place to see if I can get a better response.

Appreciate your reply.

If I remember correctly one of the other people used a utility knife or something similar to trim off a little bit of the plastic length and then it worked ok. I had a feeling it was a Belkin cable because I was suprised because I had always regarded Belkin a as quality make.

In that case I'll try trimming the connector first.  I need to be careful because if I find I need to return the drive, the cable will need to look as though it's intact and untouched.

Thanks,  David
