GA-MA790X-UD4 standby issues when overclocking the NB
« on: December 02, 2010, 10:48:32 am »
Hi. This is my first post here.I didn't find and answer, so I'm asking.

Last week I changed my dual 4870 1GB for a GTX 580. Everything went ok, until I decided to change the BIOS to see if I could push my 940 BE a little further. So I flashed the bios of the MB from F3 to the latest beta, F7b. I changed the settings on the BIOS to those I had previously (NB at 2.4, and a little more voltage to the NB and CPU NB). I have had no trouble with that.

The problem is, when I put the system on standby, or even shutdown, it restarts automatically a few minutes later, with the added problem that the wake up won't work properly, the screen would to blank, and the dvd drive flashing. I can only make a hard reset or turn off the PSU to fix it.

It is not a OS problem,I have tried in my Windows 7 X64 and my ubuntu 10.04 x64 and the results are the same.

I have reduced it to a Northbridge overclock problem. If I leave it on auto, it works perfectly. If I change it, the standby doesn't work properly.

I have tried going back to F3, and even the F5 and F6 bioses, but the results are the same.

Any help?

Hi,

Obviously it seems as if there is an issue with the BIOS, especially as it works OK with F3 but not with later versions.
It might be best to contact GTTS and see if they are aware of a problem as there might be a Beta BIOS in the works to address this.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

It's definitely something about the NB multiplier. It can't go any higher than 10x. However, the actual NB frequency doesn't matter. Right now I'm at 230x10 and it works perfectly. I have read that it happened the same to someone with the UD4P mobo.

Try disabling the powers saving settings in the BIOS.
