OK while you are there you can synchronise them.
To do that, reboot and where you would normally press DEL to enter the BIOS, instead press Alt + F12, this will flash the Backup BIOS with the MAIN BIOS contents.
Do not worry when you see a recovery comment, that is normal and means it is flashing the backup BIOS.

Next  thing to do is to clear your CMOS memory completely.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least ten minutes before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Opimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self and then press F10 to save and exit.

When I hit ALT + F12, it acts like I am just hitting F12.  I've rebooted to check the BIOS and it still shows FC/FB.  Is there a different key combination I should try?

Also - when should I hit the keys?  I do it after the initial Gigabyte splash screen comes up as the screen goes into the old DOS mode...

It can take a few times to get it right. Just hold the ALT key whilke tapping the F12 as you boot.

Are you using a USB keyboard?

If so go into the BIOS first and enable the USB Legacy Devices option first before saving and exiting to reboot.

I feel like I'm getting dumber as I work on this.  Yes, I am using a USB keyobard.  When I rebooted, I held DELETE down to get the CMOS Setup Utility screen.  In it, I used the arrow key to get to the Advanced BIOS Features and hit enter.  I swear that it had USB stuff listed there, but it didn't have 'USB Legacy Devices'.  So I turned the splash screen off, saved and exited.  Went all the way into Windows and rebooted.  I can't find any USB reference anymore when I go into the CMOS Setup Utility.  What did I mess up?

Sorry I'm being so difficult.

Try looking in the "intergrated peripherals' bit.

Thanks Fatman.  guess my medication is getting to me.

In there I see:

USB Controllers - enabled
USB Keyboard Function - enabled
USB Mouse Function - disabled
USB Storage Function - enabled

I didn't change any of them.  Nor do I see 'USB Legacy Devices'.   Weird thing is, it says the mouse is disabled, but I am using a USB mouse.

Ok - I've got the BIOS updated: FC / FC

I'm powering it down now to remove the battery.

Ok, I've done all of the steps and am up and running.  But....

When I got into Windows, I got an error message saying I might not be running genuine Windows.  I tried to run Windows Update, and it is failing.  I have the two different screens in the pic below.

I tried playing the CD in Media Player.  The good news is, I can see the levels bouncing in the volume meter.  The bad news is, still no sound.

you could just use system restore to go back to yesterday. Or manually do a windows update. If all else fails Just try re-Validating your windows.

In the BIOS the date is Jan 1 2010.  Could that be it? Got reset when I selected Optimize BIOS defaults?

Rebooted again.  This time I went in to Windows and changed the date/time there.  I think rebooted again and did not receive the Windows activation message.  I've tried pulling the speaker cord out of the back and put it back in.  They still don't put anything out.  I then re-plugged the headphones in, and -- I had sound.  I listened for a couple of minutes and then paused it.  Went back a few minutes later and Media player was frozen.  Couldn't get it ended via Task Manager, so now I'm trying to reboot again.

Fatman - I couldn't figure out how to edit it in the BIOS.  I could get to it, click on it, but couldn't see how I could change the values.

Ok it is in the cmos features just have a look there and you will get it. Try using the tab key I think to move around in there and use the up down keys to change, if memory serves me right lol.

Fatman - that is what I did.  Used the tab and arrow keys to get to the time.  When I hit up or down arrows, it just moves to the next fields.

I let the CD run for over an hour, and at some point the sound stopped again.  Could this be an issue with the board?
