OK. Painfull but we will get there in the end. ;)

Right click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select each option in turn and make sure they are all looking right. There are normally 5 options so you will need to do this five times.

In that case I would want to try some different speakers on the system. There could be a problem with the speakers themselves or the wiring. I know that you tried them on a different system but that doesn't really prove anything apart from they were working then.

This is the nutiest thing.  I plugged my new USB headset into my laptop and it worked fine.  I unplugged the speakers from the new computer and plugged them into my laptop, and they worked fine.  I then plugged the headphones into the new computer, and I had sound.  Next, I unplugged the headphones and then plugged the speakers into the front jack, and they worked (screen popped up to confirm I was using the front jack).  Moved them to the rear of the computer, confirmed I was now using the rear jack, and they didn't work.  Moved them back to the front, and they work.

Right then I think I know what the problem is.

Go into Control Panel/Realtech HD Audio Manager and the on the top right of thepage you will see Device Advanced Settings and if you click that you should find a dialogue box with various options to enable/disable sound sources etc.

I've tried all of the combinations, no sound out of the back.  Screen print of what it looked liked when I opened it (and what it looks like now) below.

I'm sorry I can't think of anything else unless there is a fault with the rear output connection.

That's what I'm thinking, too.  I'm a bit scared to return the board, though, because everything else is working fine.

Yes I can appreciate your reluctance but there again if it is a hardware problem you want it fixed and be able to use your speakers.
