Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 Intel P55 wont get as far as boot :(
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:44:45 pm »
Just received new parts to build my new pc today. Plugged everything in and the pc will fire up for about 5 seconds. All the phase lights on the motherboard will light up but wont get as far as boot.

Hardware specs:

corsair 650 watt psu
corsair 6gb ddr3 memory
ATI 6900 gfx card
intel i5 cpu
2 x 300gb sata hdd

I have rebuilt the system twice in my case and still cant get it to post. All the parts i have listed above are brand new and i have also tried an alternate psu and gfx card.
Have tried placing the mobo on cardboard box and just connecting the cpu, ram, psu and gfx card incase this was short circuiting on my pc case but still no joy. Everything spins for about 5 seconds and sometimes reboots.

Tried with 1 stick of memory also. Seriously beginning to think its a dodgy motherboard after reading similar stories. Any ideas?

wasted 7 hours on this so far :(

Hi and welcome to the joys of building your own computer!

Firstly is your GPU a 6970 or 6950?

All the LEDs should illuminate to start with and then go out as POST progresses.

Have you made sure that you have plugged in the 12v 8 pin plug near the CPU as well as the 24 pin connector ?

What slot have you put the memory module in?

Is the motherboard still on the box ?

GPU is a ati hd 6950, have also tried an nvidia 260gtx. Also tried corsair 620w psu. have made sure all the power connecters are connected and tried the ram in all the slots. Yes it is currently still setup on the cardboard box lol

Put one module in DDR3_1 which should be a white slot.

Remove and refit all your power plugs.

Have you got a buzzer attached to hear the POST code?

I have only just realised that you have 6 GB of memory. Itake it that it was bought for a X58 system rather than yours ?

i have put 1 stick in the ddr3 slot. exactly the same happens.. all the phase lights go on then everything powers off. The ram is for my setup. got a feeling i have ordered the wrong ram.

I have the following:

Is the RAM compatable?? seems the majority of ddr3 ram runs at higher that 1.5v specified on the motherboard

I would suggest that you get a buzzer as it can save hours a of wasted time faultfinding. They are extremely cheap, only a matter of pence!

The memory you have is really for the X58 boards and not yours but it will probably still run in your system. Is there any reason why you picked that memory rather than one matched to your board?

Also noticed the RAM is triple channel. Motherboard only says about double channel. Would it be worth buying some different RAM? Also cant see a speaker port on the mobo if i did buy a buzzer

The buzzer fits onto two of the pins on the Front Panel Connector block at the bottom right hand corner of your motherboard. The actual pins are labelled SPKR normally. It is polarity concious so you have to make sure that you connect it the right way round.

The Triple Channel memory was what I mentioned earlier but you didn't answer. The  chances are that the RAM would stil work but it might take a bit of tweaking to make it. The other thing is to buy a kit of a couple of modules that are listed as compatible for your motherboard.

I have ordered some different double channel ram to try. I didnt realise ram was so specific these days. Back in the days of ddr2 it would run on all different types of mobos.

New RAM should arrive tomorrow. I will let you know the outcome ;). Got a feeling it is the mobo but fingers crossed its not. Is RAM one of the last checks it does before booting?

RAM is probably the most likely to fail the POST tests.  Yes these days motherboards are far more fussy about what memory they will work with.

Sorry to hear that the memory didn't help. Have you got that buzzer fitted yet so we can hear the POST beeps ?
