GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) + USB 3
« on: February 23, 2011, 04:38:41 am »
Hi all,

I have 2 usb3 devices (Welland 2.5" enclosure and a dual SATA cradle, both of which experience the same issues.

Either of them will work fine when plugged into USB 2 ports, but won't work under USB 3. Any USB 2 device works fine when plugged into the USB 3 ports. I've tested the Welland enclosure on a friend's pc using USB 3 and that works fine.

For reference, I'm running a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) motherboard. All drivers and the BIOS have been updated to their latest versions.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be keen to hear them.
I've just about given up on a solution and am checking every few days for updated drivers and BIOS.

Thanks for reading.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

You seem to have covered most of the bases already and I can't really think of anything to add apart from trying different cables. We have had some enclosures in the past that have had problems with the plugs going into the sockets sufficiently. Beyond that I would suggest notifying GGTS of the issue and see if they have a fix.

Just enter your email address and click on the language of choice.

Thanks for the reply.  I've submitted a question to them so we'll see what comes of that.

So frustrating, another possible option is getting an add-on usb3 card, but I'm holding off on the principle I shouldn't need to.  :)

What bios and USB 3 driver versions are you using? Several bios updates claimed better USB 3 compatibility if I remember correctly. Looks like Gigabyte pulled all but the latest bios from there site. I can only see FF and FF8. There have been several driver updates for the NEC USB 3. BTW I was all hot on USB 3 but after seeing its true performance I lost interest.

GGTS replied and advised I update the bios and try again.

So I've updated from FF to Ff8 and it makes no difference to the USB3 issues.  I did need to change from AHCI to IDE in order to boot back into Windows though.

I've given them feedback and we'll see what they come back with.

2.0.32.0 is the usb3 driver version I'm using.

Will update once I hear more.

Have you tried disabling the ESATA in the BIOS?

Nope, haven't considered that - I'll give it a try - but why do you think that may work?

I'm also having weird blue scrren "memory_management" errors randomly happening - think it's the ocz reaper memory that's not so compatible with this board.  I really don't know.

I have to say, I'm getting close to just going out and buying an Asus board and seeing if that solves all the issues I've been having.  Just so frustrating ...

ANyway, will try the e-sata and let you know tomorrow.

Thanks ...

It is quite possible that you have a memory error especially with the OCZ RAM. Can you post what the stop code was on the BSODs ?

Purchasing a different motherboard won't help if you have memory problems.

It often helps to disable anything that you aren't using in the BIOS as it frees up resources and there are less things to conflict with each other.

Okay, I've replaced the ram and whilst I likely need to tweak the settings there have been no blue screens as yet - I'll know more in the next day or so.

No change with disabling e-sata.

Also, I clearly did something in the settings that the bios didn't like as it had to reload from backup and I'm now back at FB - have left it at that for the moment and will update once Ff8 is out of "beta" and is considered final.  No change to the usb 3 scenario though - checked, just in case  :)

Anyway, any other ideas are welcome and I'll update if any further developments come up.

Thanks

Yes thanks for keeping us informed of the progress and let's just hope that the new memory gives you a stable platform to work on the USB issue.

Well, the system seems stable at least, though I have yet to set the memory settings at their optimum.  For now though, I'm just happy it's stable. :)

I did receive a reply from GGTS - it reads as follows:

===============================================================================
   Dear Sir,

Thank you for your kindly mail and inquiry. About the issue you mentioned, unfortunately, if the problem still remains, a further testing or examination to your system might be required. We suggest you to contact with your supplier for checking and repairing. If your supplier cannot help you, please contact with local distributor for further assistance. ============================================================================

So I'm not really sure where to go from here - I guess taking it back to the retailer (which happens to also be listed as a supplier) and see what, if anything they are able to come up with.

I've seen a few other forums around the web with similar problems, none of which has a solution.  It may be that the simplest thing is to get a usb3 addon card.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.  :)

There are new usb3 drivers listed here:

http://www.station-drivers.com/page/nec.htm

Version: 2.0.34.0

Unfortunately, there is also no change with these.  Just thought I'd update and advise.

Thanks again for keeping us in the picture guardy and I am sorry to hear that it hasn't cured your problem. It is looking like it will be a case of RMA to get it fixed at least in the short term. :-\
