There are quite a few smal programs like that which are worth running every so often as well as your usual anti-virus suite. Never hurts to have a "belt and braces" approach to these things.

I used to use avast free which I was quite happy with, and it is still on my sons PC but I thought I would try adaware (I know I used to just think it was a spyware cleaner) http://www.lavasoft.com/ ...anyway I tried the free version, then after a few times of loading it up it gave me a message saying 12 months of Pro for £7.29 so I got it as I had a bit of money in my paypal, then when I bought it I got another message saying 'like us on facebook for another 3 months free' lol
15 months ad-aware pro for £7.29 is alright to me! :)

I also use:
McAfee site advisor browser plugin - free
McAfee security scan plus - free (bit like the old McAfee stinger)

Housecall is also a good free online scanner

A good bit of advice for you here Allan......if it screws up the first machine don't install it on the other two ;)

I have been watching this thread for a while now. I was going to post but never got around to it until now. I have never used Kaspersky of any kind but I have had the misfortune of having to remove it from several PC's over the years. IMO its as bad or worse than NAV or NIS was in the past. Either the uninstaller fails or it works but leaves so much crap around some other security programs either refuse to install or will not work correctly. From what I see a clean windows install would be easier in the long run as I have spent many hours cleaning up after Kaspersky. The programs them selves seem to work good otherwise though they seems to slow PC's down. More so on lower end PC's.

As far as what program is the best, well what ever works good for you is the best. Myself I use Avast 6 IS on my three PC's. I like the GUI very much and I find it does not adversely effect system performance. When I work on friends and relatives PC's that are in need of a security product I recommend Avast 6 IS or Avast 6 Free. I also use and recommend SAS and or MBAM as additional manual scanners. Layered protection is the only way to go as no product gives 100% protection. I also use and recommend using Firefox with the NoScript extension over IE. Spybot SD was once a great product but IMO it has fallen behind over the years. The resident protection can cause serious problems with some security programs. Spybot SD can also f'up windows if it is uninstalled without first undoing the changes it made before removal of the program. Spybot SD 2 may fix these issues? I also agree ComboFix is a great tool when nothing else works.

Pierre,

Me too!  MSSE has been flawless in its protection of several computers I have built.  I like the price too: FREE!

I do use System Mechanic 10 for other clean up issues and it too has worked well.
