GA-H55M-S2V unstable system

GA-H55M-S2V unstable system
« on: May 17, 2011, 07:16:25 pm »
Hi I have the following hardware:

I3-540 3.06GHz Intel Core Clarkdale
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2V (rev. 1.4)
Patriot Series G 'Sector 5' Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 PGV34G1333ELK
WD Caviar Green 1TB WD10EARS
OCZ StealthXStream 500W 36A

I have problems when copying from USB. The copy process completed successfully but the file is damaged.
In addition the system is unstable: the Windows 7 Aero connects and disconnects and some applications stop working quite often.

I read that this motherboard provides more voltage to the USB port than normal. Could this be causing the problem?

I have tested the memory with Memtest86 + using separate DIMMs. As a result there is a DIMM with problems. But I reinstalled using the DIMM that is supposedly good and the problem persists.

This link specifies that the Patriot DIMMs are compatible with the chipset H55: http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?808-Compatibility-Do-I-have-the-right-memory- for-my-P67-H67-X58-AM3-P55-H55-H57.

You know of any reason that could cause this problem.
Thanks in advance.
Greetings.

Hi

The first thing I do notice is that you are using a Western Digital Green for booting. That is not recommended. It can cause all sorts of problems as it keeps trying to power down to save energy. I would also advise testing the "good" module again just to make sure.

Disc spin down can corrupt data writes...........Try taking the Hard disc out of the read/write loop by copying a chunky file from say DVD to USB a few times to see if the problem persists........if it doesnt ..........it's the green disc...........if it's still there.......mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Thanks for replying and sorry for the delay in responding. Today I made a lot of tests trying to find a pattern on the error.

What little I discovered the error of copying from USB is that it depends on the load that has the cpu. If cpu cores are inactive copy damaged files from USB. If instead the cores are above 40% the copy is made without problems.
I perform the test to copy the DVD directly to the USB to rule out that the problem is on the hard disk.

Besides the problem of copying from USB I found another problem. I tried to install Windows 7 and when expanding the file returns this error in 6% to 7%:

"Windows can not install required files. The file May Be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation Are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570"

I tested the parts separately in another pc and works well. The next thing will be to test the ensemble pieces in a different pc to see how they behave.

Please any help would be helpful. This error is a little strange to me. And most importantly, to claim the warranty I need to specify which part that has the problem.
Thanks in advance.
Greetings.

Download the  Memtest suitable for your system......make/burn a bootable iso-DVD or bootable usb and boot from this media, not through windows...... test memory one at a time ...........unfortunately you need to do this to rule out a memory (DIMM) problem ....then post your findings.

I do not understand what you mean by the Memtest Suitable for your system. I tested the memory with the following tools:

Memtest86 + v4.20 (Boot CD)
Memtest v4.0 (Boot CD)
Memtest v4.0 (Windows)
Memory Diagnostic (Windows 7)

I used the default BIOS settings which I put below:

BCLK ............. 133
CPU CLOCK ............... 22X
CPU FREQ ................. 2.96 (133 X 22)
MEMORY FREQ ................. 1066 (133 X 8)
XMP ............................ DISABLE
TIMING ........................ CAS - 7 tRCD - 7 tRP - 7 tRAS - 20 tRC - 27 TRRD - 4, tWTR - 4, TWR - 8 tWTP - 19 TWL - 7 tRFC - 60, TRTP - 4, tFAW - 20, CMD - 1, TRD - 12
VOLTAGE ........................ DRAM - 1.5V, QPI - 1.1V

The results have been that one of the DIMMs (# 1) passes the test with most of the settings while the other DIMM (# 2) does not pass any test with any setting. For this particular configuration the DIMM # 1 is the only one pass without errors.
At this point I have just installed the DIMM has no problems. However, the problem continues.

I tried also disable some technologies that vary the CPU clock and voltage of the microprocessor in dependence on the load you have. But the problem continues.

CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) ..... DISABLE
C3/C6 STATE SUPPORT ............ DISABLE
CPU EIST FUNCTION ................ DISABLE

I'm still doing tests. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Greetings.

HI

You say you have checked the memory and one stick has problems. In that case you will need to RMA the whole kit as they are matched. Did you test them properly like so:

Please follow these instructions exactly.

I would suggest that you download and run the latest version of  Memtest86+ to check your RAM first.

Memtest86+        http://www.memtest.org/

Insert one stick of memory in slot 1 and run Memtest on it for at least 10 complete loops/cycles and if there are no errors then swap it over with the next one and continue untill you have checked all  modules.

If you have any errors the module is faulty.

If you have any faulty modules you will have to return the whole kit as they are matched.

Post back when you have done that with the results.

I have the latest version of Memtest86 + (4.20). In tests I've done I've never reached 10 cycles. I will then test the way you explain me.
Keep the frequency settings, times and voltages that I put earlier in the post (default) or should I change the settings?
I test the two modules in the same slot or put each of the modules in both slots?

For what it's something I've done some tests on copies. When copying from USB directly to DVD corrupts files. Are also damaged when copying from DVD to hard disk. The only way they are not damaged is when copying files across the network.
In these tests have not been able to assume that is the hard disk that has problems.
I'm testing with a 300 mb zip file then unzip the copy attempt to see if it is damaged. All copies processes confirmed in another PC to ensure they are not defective flash memory or DVD.

When making tests with Memtest86 + posting the results.
Thanks in advance.
Greetings.

Hi

I would suggest putting the timings to the default settings for the memory tests as that way if there are any errors you can be sure it is down to the memory sticks themselves and not the overclock.

Yes put one module in at a time in the first slot and test.

Tests with Memtest86 + with 10 passes or cycles for each test. I am posting the results:

 DIMM # 1 (SLOT # 1) ....... NO PASS (2 ERROR)
 DIMM # 2 (SLOT # 2) ....... NO PASS (781 ERROR)

The DIMM # 2 had already identified as defective and not had it installed. The DIMM # 1 I had not returned errors in previous test but never exceeded 2 cycles.
It is possible that two modules come defective?
With only 2 errors DIMM # 1 can generate all the problems of copy?
I have tested with other memory with the same program. Sometimes return errors but windows runs stably.
The next test will be to test the memories of a friend to see if the system stabilizes.
I will make the following test results.

 Greetings.

Even one error is too many! The modules are both obviously faulty and will cause problems if used. Trying them in a friends machine doesn't really prove anything other than they work or don't work at the time. Also trying a friends memory in your system only works if it is compatible. You need to RMA them.
