24 gb on x58a-ud5
« on: May 25, 2011, 12:25:23 am »
Hello I am new to the forum, I want to talk about what has happened to me.
I bought the motherboard shown up and wanted to put on 16/24gb of ram, then I bought the ocz written in the title but I just can not make them permanent ...
My problem is that despite having 16 gb installed during the post bios tells me 12GB ..
Believing that it did not do I removed two sticks of ram for a total of 8 gb but it indicates that there are only four entered.
There are weeks that I work and I can not find the solution ...
Moved by the desperation and not waste any more time then I would know qualified people like you advice on what I buy ram (OCZ sell them) or better, what brand of memory do you recommend to work at least 16 gb stable

I forgot some info on my system

gigabyte X58A UD5
i7 980X
ocz

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Well personally I wouldn't have bought the OCZ memory but as you have (as long as they are compatible) we will try and get them to work.

There can be several reasons for your problem. The CPU socket could have bent pins, the settings could be wrong or the Maxmem setting could be wrongly set.

Hopefully it will be one of the last two.

Firstly check the Maxmem setting in Configsys. If in the MSConfig maximum memory setting it says something other than 24GB change the setting and exit.

Post back if that doesn't fix it.

The CPU socket could have bent pins... :o
However I do not think there are any bent pins, because two months ago, the pc works fine.
Anyway I will verify what you suggested and will post all the BIOS settings to see if there is something wrong in the bios.
Thanks in advance

No problem. If you let us see what your settings are maybe we can help put them right.

You say that everything was working a month or so ago well something has gone wrong now so it could be anything.

Then...there's good news, I remove 8 gigs of ram and now the PC has no problem actually tells me eight gigabytes :)
I did some tests with "prime 95" and everything is ok no errors, no reboots etc ...
The problem comes out  when I'll try to install the rest of the ram that will begin to be errors

Yes I would expect 8GB to work fine wioth the Auto settings but if you want to fil the slots then you will need to tweak them a bit.

If you want to fil the banks try manually inserting these settings.

9-9-9-24

Dram voltage 1.68v

QPI/Vtt 1.25v - 1.4v (you will have to see what works best)

Memory multiplier 10x

Uncore multiplier 20x to 22x again play around to find stability.

Hello I'm testing the modules with memtest from bios and now everything is ok ..
Thanks for your settings and try later, but not too high and out of specification? Can I damage anything?

If you have good memories and should work without problems

Here I have 6 sticks with 6 * 2 G in my machine with the same motherboard ( GA-X58A-UD5 ) , in default mode everything works fine

And yet these are not the same manufacturer ( mixed Nanya Technologies 685 Mhz capable and KingSton 800 Mhz  )

I have problems before finalement i had a  bad stick in a lot

I have good ram maybe and some people  suggested me this configuration to be quiet

6 GB RAM (3x2GB)
12GB RAM (6x2GB)
18 GB RAM (3x2GB + 3x4GB)
24 GB RAM (6x4GB)
Howeve few days ago I bought  6x2gb  kingston ram certified from gigabyte manual  .. let's see if the problem is really that someone suggest me.
A strange thing I noticed, however, I do not know if this is really the problem ... memtest from bios with 2moduls of ram in slot 3 is not started ... damaged the connectors on the motherboard?

I would say that you should be running Memetest86+ with the memory in  the first slot  and test as so:

Please follow these instructions exactly.

I would suggest that you download and run the latest version of  Memtest86+ to check your RAM first.

Memtest86+        http://www.memtest.org/

Insert one stick of memory in slot 1 and run Memtest on it for at least 10 complete loops/cycles and if there are no errors then swap it over with the next one and continue untill you have checked all  modules.

If you have any errors the module is faulty.

If you have any faulty modules you will have to return the whole kit as they are matched.

Post back when you have done that with the results.

Insert one stick of memory in slot 1 and run Memtest on it for at least 10 complete loops/cycles and if there are no errors

Test another stick in slot 1 .. and continue with  all the sticks one at a time always in the slot 1

For me the problem was easy to find because with 1 stick ( bad  ) the computer not even boot when he was alone in the slot 1 !!
