Ga-880Ga-ud3h + 1100t + Kingston 8gb 1600 FAIL
« on: July 10, 2011, 02:34:19 am »
Ga-880Ga-ud3h + 1100t + Kingston hyperx 8gb kit 1600.
All new parts. New power supply. Ordered from amazon.

I got it to boot to ubuntu twice, it crashed as soon as I clicked on anything. Most of the time it didn't complete the boot.

So I tried to reinstall ubuntu. It froze at the screen to select live demo or install. Every time.

Flash CMOS
Reset ram
Unplug everything I can
Remove one ram module

Try to install vista 64. Then xp 64. Then a few versions of ubuntu. NOTHING

Notice the ram clock is at 1333. Set it to 1600. Instant freeze.
Restart. Set ram clock down. Try to install. Fail.

Set ram clock down to 800. Xp installs. Replace second ram module. Xp boots.

Grrr

Then I reboot and there's no post. Just two long beeps.
Restart. Post says memory clock incorrect. Reset to 1333. Hangs soon after boot. Back to 800. Errors.

What do I do here?

Make sure your ram is set to unganged as it seems that in ganged mode it causes weird things to happen.  What timings are you using on the ram 9-9-9-24 possiably?

Unganged. 9-9-9-24.
It will boot with any ram speed except 1600. But it hangs after two to three minutes.

Does it sound like a ram issue? I have tried failsafe and optimized defaults, and messed with everything I can think of.

Also try in 1 timing mode be 1T instead of 2T  that will help determine if it is ram and if you are using just two slots which 2 and if first two try in the second two.  Also do you know someone with different 1600 ram. Try using those lets narrow this down. If at all possiable list the make and model of psu and watts please.

Honestly leaning towards ram at this point. If it was Motherboard that slot probably just not work as opposed to a timing issue.
Also is the bios up to date. What revision is the motherboard there are 5 different ones. Are you using 2 gig sticks in each slot or the 4 gig sticks in two slots. If it is the 4 gig sticks in two slots then it would be model KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX  which are not on the approved list. I would check the memory support list and make sure your model is supported or post model here and i can tell you. Good luck will check in tomorrow to see if any replies as is late here and time for bed.

Yes it's the 8gx. Tried first two slots and every other slot.
Motherboard is rev 3.1. Latest bios.
Memtest. Is that a dos prog? I use linux mostly, I'll see if I can find an equivalent. Also will post results of 1t test.

Odd side note. The computer seems to run a little longer each time. Didn't crash for almost two hours during a movie playback. Of course that's not very intensive. But it has crashed at idle.

So, of the supported ram for this board. How can I achieve the max 16gb of ram? I thought I was halfway there, but apparently not.

KET16D1 Kingston 4GB KHX1600C9D3K3/12GX    Thats a 4 gig stick that is compatiable. Also kingston.  Just go to gigabyte support and downloads and input the model of your motherboard.

Power supply is a brand new enermax 500watt.
I don't know anyone else that uses ddr3.
It's running at 1t ram for now. I will let u know if it crashes again. Probably will

Also, the 12x ram is a 4g stick sold in a set of three for triple channel. How do I put a stick in the last slot? I read the ram compatibility. They say it will take 16gb but the ram list doesn't agree. That's not important. What is important is:

Which part is causing the problem? How sure are we that it is the ram? I need to return a part before time runs out.

Also, what are the chances it could be something other than ram? What else could it be?

Hi there,

which version of BIOS are you running? If it isn't the latest FF version it might be worthwhile updating to see if it helps. If you do need to update to this version then DO NOT use QFlash as we would usually advise but use either Gigabyte's @BIOS or FLASHSPI.EXE.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Hi,

that's the motherboard revision. If you go into BIOS and press the F9 key it will give you the BIOS version that you are running. If you have disabled the Full Screen Logo option then you will also see the BIOS version shown on the monitor during the POST process.
