Nice little Raid boxes those are.....tell me, did they come with a Raid PCI-E card or can you add what ever you like....as in are they compatible with third party cards?

No card, it's just a hotswap 2.5" enclosure with two fans in the rear. Has standard SATA-type power inputs, plus 4 SATA (and SAS) connectors in back. Use any card you like.

Don't know if you have already picked your card as yet....they can go fro $15 to $1000 plus......if you're into bang for buck.....have a look at Highpoints RocketRaid 640 or 644 PCI-E card ...the 640 internal 644 external..........Head office in CA....$240us 12 months ago......down to $90-$100us ATM.........I us one for storage.......they do add about 30sec to the boot time but work very well......support 0,1,5,10 full 6Gb/s compliant and JBOD via not one but two controllers on the 640/644 cards.........worth a look anyway.

Poor simple me...decided not to RAID....awwwww.......

But regardless, the difference between this new computer -- and the old one, miles better.

Next task, transferring all my photos and Lightroom catalog+preferences over to the new computer.

I Hope "EyeDontKnow" understands this is purely Banter driven Humour mixed with boredom ....

But to get something out of this and into the forum as to why he may have chosen to err on the side of caution re Raid.........

I don't think it's made the English dictionary as yet ... so I'm going to call it "Dataphobia" .......... Dataphobics are generally Photographers with a chronic fear of loosing some or all of a digital image collection.

Most material things can be replaced through insurance..........But How do you replace a single winning image you took in Deepest Africa......or your first wife's picture......... facing her first and last lions charge armed with a high powered hand-bag............Raid can be a very scary thing for the novas with a Dataphobic tendency..........Most people don't have the knowledge, time or inclination to get the very best out of present technology........or deciding the extra blistering performance..........is just not worth the added risk.

You can be born with Dataphobia..........or you can develop the condition as I did 4 or 5 years ago..........no UPS.........no backup...........Raid5 PC when the power went out :o ............it's the sickest feeling in the pit of your stomach when hours later..........having tried "EVERYTHING"...........that 3 years of camera work is , is , is...........Well totally Gone!   ;)

It's up to us as a community to get the knowledge out there that done properly .....Raid with all of it's advantages..........CAN be done safely............and offer better redundancy then a single hard drive

A very sensible solution Allan is of course to use a RAID or single drive if you prefer and make at least two backups. Ideally at least one of which is not to be kept on site that way even the worst of disasters can usually be avoided. I backup to a dedicated external drive and then also make backups on optical disks which I can store away from the bunker. Only the most important data needs this sort of attention and regular backups to just a seperate external drive will suffice. Of course a well made system with a large UPS to keep it up and running can alleviate most common causes of failure anyway.

Thanks for the support, and the classification as a "dataphobe".  :o
I'll admit the timidity.

Yes, I am indecisive. I usually tend to come to proper conclusions after typing the wrong decisions/ideas first.
Did you hear about the constipated mathematician ?....he worked it out with a pencil.

I do have a serious question though, just so I understand RAID arrays on a single controller.... If there are other HDD's on the same (Intel) controller - that are NOT part of the array....is TRIM supported on those non-array'd drives ?

  EyeDontKnow

Be proud!......Dataphobes are the smart ones... ;).....Even Intel are working on trim within Raid.....as is OCZ......but the difference is OCZ have cracked it.......you'll soon see product on the shelves.....

But back to Intel.......This was snipped off Overclockers.net by the Moderator but explains it well.............Intel RAID is a superset AHCI so when RAID is enabled, you are already running in AHCI Mode. You will need Intel drivers to utilize RAID. However, currently only MS AHCI drivers support TRIM. So if you do run RAID, you will lose TRIM support on that array............But..........You will have TRIM if the drive is not part of an array......Manually set/check TRIM is active regardless.........no TRIM (3) ....TRIM (0)

Intel is working on providing a driver that can do RAID and support TRIM. This does NOT mean it will support TRIM on an SSD RAID though yet.....

Above was pulled from Intel.........  "What a typically conflicting Statement"
