P55-UD4P trying to get 8GB of memory to work, HELP!!!!
« on: August 31, 2011, 05:15:06 pm »
Hello, i've had my P55-UD4P Gigabyte board for a couple years, it has been great. i've ran it 24/7 with my i5 750 at 4.0ghz. Except recently i tried to upgrade from 4GB to 12GB and it is just not working! i have put ALL overclocks back to factory settings to try to figure this out.

 First i bought G.Skill Ripjaws X F3 8GB kit:
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=57...ture=G%2ESkill

but even with just the new memory in, my motherboard would not post. so, i rma'd it, and ordered some Corsair Vengeance 8GB kit:
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=57...acture=Corsair

the kit does the same thing! i'm hoping it is not the same memory underneath. even if i can't get all 12GB working, i'd be quite happy with running with 8GB.

At first i was trying with the Bios version i've had for a long time, than i updated to the latest Bios (F10), but nothing changed. if i put just 1 stick in, the system boots fine. but if i put both sticks in, it just beeps like crazy and doesn't post.

i sent in a ticket to Gigabyte about it, but they have not responded.  i've tried to loosen the screws on my heatsink, a Noctua NH-U12P, but that didn't help.  i've also tried different memory voltage, starting at stock, 1.5, then 1.6, then 1.7.  nothing changed.

any help would be greatly appreciated!?

Hi and welcome.

The first thing to do would be to run Memtest86+ on all the modules one at a time. It is time consuming but decide which memory you are going to try and get working and then follow these instructions exactly.

Memtest86+        http://www.memtest.org/

Insert one stick of memory in slot 1 and run Memtest on it for at least 10 complete loops/cycles and if there are no errors then swap it over with the next one and continue untill you have checked all  modules.

If you have any errors the module is faulty.

If you have any faulty modules you will have to return the whole kit as they are matched.

Post back when you have done that with the results.

thanks for your reply, i appreciate it :)

i have ran memtest with on both sticks, and they both pass just fine.  both sticks work 100% fine one their own, but i can't put both of them in at the same time in any configuration (however, my old 2x2gb of OCZ ram, i have always run in dual-channel mode).

Well it is possible that the memory controller has been damaged and only one channel is still working now.

i would think the same thing, except that my old 2x2GB OCZ DDR-1333 works perfect in dual channel mode.  How can it be that it is somehow broken only when 8GBs are installed?

No I wouldn't think that is possible at all and maybe it is more likely that the memory is not fully compatible with the board.

that sure would be sad if very popular G.Skill and Corsair memory kits are not compatible with the board.

I was about to post the same question except I have a different board, in my case it runs 6gb great but will not except 8gb. All sticks are OK.
My systems OS is win7 home premium 64 bit, memory is Kingston hyper ddr3 x blu.
The board in question is a gigabyte, GA-Z68X-UD3R-B3.
Hope someone finds an answer, to help us both I even tried asking on other sites, no luck.
Extra info;
CPU;  intel i7 2600.
PSU; Corsair TX650.
I was wondering if it might be lack of power from the PSU?
Ben.
PS this has nothing to do with a last post, as I am still waiting for a reply from Gigabyte regards a faulty board.

Hi

Your memory problem is probably purely down to BIOS settings as it will run dual channel ok but then won't work once you fill all the banks. Because of this extra load on the memory controller you will need to manually enter the timings and increase the voltage a touch to encourage it to work.

Have you made sure that they are inserted in the WHITE slots DDR3_1 and DDR3_3 ?

Well to be honest then I don't know what to suggest now. The memory modules seem to be fine, the board works ok, you have manually entered the timings....everything should be working.
