Multiplier up/down when being locked
« on: October 03, 2011, 01:01:50 pm »
My system is running fine on multiplier 48.

When running flightsimulator thye multiplier changes constantly between 28-48.
When not being taxed the system keeps the multiplier at 48.

Turbo boost has been disabled and also cpu enhanced state.

I am really puzzled.

CPU tmeps are 61-66 C.

Today I ran CPUID Hardware Monitor and to my surprise I saw my cpu reaching temps of 96 C ! !
Now I understand that the multiplier was getting loweredr ; the temp had to go down.

So I first dialed back to 4 Ghz with stock settings.
Idle the temps 42-44 C .

Just by firing up the FSX menu, so not being in the game itself,  causes temps to raise to 57 C.
Loading the game makes the temps rise to 70C and flying in the game let temps rise to 76 C.

Remeber this is watercooling ; all fans are clean, water level is at high.
My former processor was an I860 and with a Asus P5P55D mobo was running at 4.25 Ghz and temps never exeeded 80 degrees.
With a vcore of 1.6.

What I did was removing the cpu block cleaned the cpu and the waterblock and put it back with new pasta.
The max temp now is 85 C and idle is 43 C.

All advices/suggestions are welcome.

Have you recently updated Bios ..... Vcore at 1.6 is really up-there .... do you have all this set to auto or is this a lot of your personal settings.

What the BIOS screen post as to the temp is more trust worthy then most Apps ..... if you have desk monitors, use two and average out the two.

OCCT is rather good and configurable to include TMP0,1 and 2 as well as CPU and all cores on a graph updating every second, even in Idle!

with clock and temps that high, you have to establish  good , accurate reading before you move forward, CPUs are not cheap

You said you dialed it back to 4 Ghz......from what?

Anyway the main thing you need to add is a FULL system spec and any unusual system parameters(voltages and timings) if you want help.....I suspect this is why the threads been light on answers for you

Thermaltake Kandalf case with factory built in liquid cooling system

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Voltages :
Vcore 1.48
Loadline 6
QPI 1.16
System agent 0.975
PCH 1.12
CPU Pll 1.88
Dram 1.66

System temp 43 C.

With a lower Vcore the system will hang within 2-3 minutes in flightsimulator.

Itried with a Vcore of 1.46 anmd Loadline levle of 8, but than the processor gets to 87 C.

I really get jalous when reading this overclock to 5Ghz with such low voltages :  http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18279474

Is it my mob or is it my processor ? I am really puzzled.

Now it all comes back to me with the extra information supplied......

"With a lower Vcore the system will hang within 2-3 minutes in flightsimulator.".....I'm not surprised as soon as I read ...

"Thermaltake Kandalf case with factory built in liquid cooling system"

These systems are now 6-7yrs old and never designed to run the type of loads you're loading onto it ..... I know as i ripped one apart to build my present system........if you're trying to cool the GPU as well :o

Let me explain a bit more ..... regardless if you're running half inch fitting or 2" fittings for that matter ..... the system is only as good as the smallest fitting or bore size ...... the radiator feed and exhaust tubes on the Kandalf have a 6mm bore .... their for a very, very limited flow rate

In idle and light load things are fine......when you load the system up....not enough flow-rate is available to cool the CPU sufficiently.

You can check this by a temp reading of the inlet temp of the radiator .... I suspect it will climb , and climb under load, .....probably at around 40C (Rad inlet temp) your system will crash at those clock loads ..... the flow rate for a 6mm hole (Flow rate for a set/given head pressure) is 8 times lower then a 12mm (1/2") hole  ..... this is a set ratio .... "Every time you double the nominal bore size,  flow rate will increase by a factor of 8 if the pump pressure is constant".....FACT!

If you want those clocks......look at modding and fitting a high performance RAD .... I did ;)

Thanks for the help.
Now I understand wha lot more.

One question remains : why the system was able to cool  my former setup with a 860 ( stock 2.8 ) and running it at 4.25 Ghz with a temp that never exeeded  80 C  in Flightsimulato ?

I was under the impression that the SandyBridge runs much cooler with lower voltages....

Luck of the draw!....you probably had a really good chip!..... there all really different ... even from the same batch ..... I know of one person that can go through 4 or 5 CPUs before he says ...."this is the one"  .... sandybridge will fly but you have to keep the heat load under control, .... you still don't know if your chip is a goodie or Exellent till you can get ample cooling on the CPU at the much higher heat loads ... I suspect you have a good one...... as you can get there ..... but your cooling loop can't hold it there

Go through Intel's site and check out the stock thermal loading (Watts) of both chips, ..... it,s all maths, .....With the stock voltage / Mhz / and stated Watts of heat generated .......you can make your own formula to work out any given clock heat loading

All CPUs are different and some will far out do others. Everybody is looking for the "golden chip" when overclocking and if you are lucky to find one then the sky's the limit. As Allan said though you still have to keep it cool or it won't last long.

Allen , as you wrote that have modificated the Kandalf LCS, would you tell me with what you have replaced it ?

And can you tell me how I can mesure th eimlet temp of the radioator ?
The tubes are feeling rather cold.

Thanks in advance.

Ps : To be sure I am going to have the cpu tested by the store where I bought it. As I have to send it by mail it will take to the end of the week before I will know more.

The same with the mobo, that I bought form another store.

Hi

The best way of measuring the tempertures at a specific point in a loop is with a sensor that actually screws into the connectors like this:

http://www.candccentral.co.uk/phobya-temperature-sensor-internal-external-g1-4.html

I have several of these and they work brillliantly.

Thanks, will buy me a sensor.

Any advice on a replacement liquid cooling sytsem which would fit into the Kandalf ?

What DM states is a very good, dedicated, permanent  solution for monitoring temp at specific points, yes even I have a couple of these in specific locations ..... but you also need somewhere to plug them into..... a second alternative is a non contact thermometer ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Non-Contact-IR-Infrared-Digital-Thermometer-Laser-/310339684448 ... this allows you to measure ANY point you wish.

Holding a rubber tube to measure temp will not cut it ..... you have to at least find something metal ... like the inlet (high temp side) of the RAD ....

the Rad mod I did required some handy work with a Jig-saw and a few hand tools and a cordless drill, not stunning, but highly practical and efficient and Ive included 2 rather dirty shots I did with the phone to give you some idea...... I even managed to squeeze in 6 fans for push/pull, which allows me to run the fans via a controller at 700/800 RPM for about 30ish DBAs of noise tops.... very cool!

The Rad is a Phobya G-Changer 360 .... excellent Rad for the money

Many thanks for the great help.
This idea is certainly something I am going to try !

In the mean time I did some temp tests :
