Blank screen after enabling secure boot on X79-UD4

Blank screen after enabling secure boot on X79-UD4
« on: September 13, 2013, 08:49:39 am »
Hey guys & gals.

I have a GA-X79-UP4 rev.1.0 motherboard and I recently installed the UEFI bios F4, after installing Windows 8.1 RTM.

I noticed I had som new options in BIOS that I've never seen before relating to secureboot and UEFI. I turned on Ultra Fast boot, with VGA adapter setting set to Auto. Everything seemed to be working until I saw that in Windows 8.1 I had gotten a watermark in the lower right corner saying "Secureboot isn't configured correctly".

What I could find out after some fast googling was that I needed to generate some default keyes in the bios. So I went back in to bios, used the custom secure boot option to generate some default keys, saved the setting and rebooted. And now all I get when turning on m,y computer is a blank screen.

I've tried resetting the bios settings by taking out the battery and also using the clear cmos jumper, but that didn't seem to help (clear CMOS jumper for atlest 20 sec and battery for atleast a couple of minutes). What happens is that my power on the computer and my fans spin up, but then the fans stop (but not to a halt because they start spinning again before that, like the computer is losing power) but then starts again. And at the same time the light on my keyboard & mouse starts to light up but turn off suddenly. This repeats in an infinite loop (like if I would push the reset button in mid POST over and over again).

I saw that this guys was having the same issue (but with another hardware setup) as me but he never replied if that solution worked for him.

"Secureboot isn't configured correctly".

On the Bios update - WHY?

On the secureboot - Was this there before the bios update or after?

For a test I just installed it on my spare X79 board and the thing is running great.

I would take the battery out and jump out the cmos and leave it for a couple hrs or even over night.

I have a smiliar issue, after the bios update all my secure boot keys were gone and when I tried to restore them and save and exit I would have the EXACT SAME ISSUE. I fixed my board by mashing the reset button about a dozen times which forced it to kick over and boot off the backup bios (just keep hitting it till the system powers down, it will power it self back on) at which point it lets me know the main bios is CORRUPT and flashes from the backup bios. I have done this twice now and don't wish to do it a 3rd time to find out if I restore the keys but leave secure boot off if it will work. Gigabyte NEEDS to fix this ASAP.

Gigabyte NEEDS to fix this ASAP.

Why so Microsoft control what we put on are computer. That is what secure boot is all about.

It is my right to us my computer the way I want not Microsoft. I'll use Win 7 till Microsoft burns and crash.

People hate windows 8 now and then they are throwing this in the mix. Microsoft has already shot off one foot.

This will shoot off the other foot and there will fall flat on their face what a joke.

With the first question I suppose I mean why I updated the BIOS? Because I was gonna bench an IVY-E I was going to get the day after.

On the second question: I had never used any of the secure boot options before using bios version F4. And I installed 8.1 before updating the BIOS.

I've had the battery out for 22 hours with the power cable not connected to the system and the CLR CMOS jumpered. It did not help, but I am gonna try Wobble's suggestion and try to force it so it switches over to the secondary BIOS.

Try this. Make sure to follow directions carefully and exactly. If it does not work the first time try it again.

BIOS Recover Method Via Manually Invoking BACKUP BIOS Auto-Recovery
Using Power Supply - On/Off Switch

It is possible to make the BIOS Auto-Recovery kick in (Dual BIOS) and re-flash the MAIN BIOS with the contents of the BACKUP BIOS.

This is a simple and easy method for anyone to try before having to resort to other more difficult methods, or a RMA.

1. Shut off the power supply using the switch on the back of the PSU, wait 10-15 seconds.
2. Press and hold the case Power On swtich, then while still holding turn on the power supply from the switch on the rear.
3. Still holding the case power on switch, the board will start, once it does release the case power on switch and shut off the power supply via the switch on the read of the unit. (Do the latter two parts as quickly as you can once the board starts)
4. The board will shut down.
5. Turn the power supply back on using the switch on the rear of the unit.
6. Turn on the motherboard by pressing the case power on button.

Once the board starts this time you should see the Gigabyte splash screen, or POST page, then the Auto-Recovery from Dual BIOS will kick in. You will see a checksum error, and then recovery from BACKUP BIOS will begin. Once it is done reboot your machine and enter the BIOS and load optimized defaults then save/apply/reboot back to BIOS.

Now you are done, and will be using whatever BIOS was in your BACKUP BIOS, From there you can attempt whatever you were previously trying, or update your BIOS to the latest version.

Thank you so much man, that did the trick and on the first try even. But the strange part is that the backup BIOS had the same version so I didn't even need to flash a new version. Great job!

I have a similar problem but mine was about the GPU not being compatible with secure boot. The problems arises
I have this problem as of now.
Secureboot Enabled + HD4870 = System won't boot or show anything on screen.
Secureboot Disabled + HD4870 = System boot with watermark on windows 8.1 saying "secureboot is not correctly configured"

Secureboot Enabled + Intel HD Graphics  (form i7 3770) = System boot perfectly without watermark.

So, you need to flash an UEFI bios for your card or get a new gpu that support it, if this was the case, what gpu were you using?

ALSO, OTHER MOTHERBOARDS VENDORS SHOW A WARNING AT BIOS IF YOUR GPU IS UEFI CAPABLE OR DON'T, BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGE, GIGABYTE INSTEAD JUST LET YOU CHANGE THIS AND SHOW BLANK SCREEN IF THE PROBLEM ARISE WITHOUT ANY WARNING.
