GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 - BIOS query
« on: February 23, 2015, 08:16:47 am »
Hello,

I have an issue when after cold boot (or sometimes after reboot) my GPU is misbehaving - windows is laggy, vids are stuttering, games are unplayable. After restart everything is usually fine.

What I noticed is that it happens when booting to windows takes more time than usual. The only way I can tell is because I can see that my PC is displaying Gigabyte logo longer than normally.

There is no errors displaying anywhere. Just everything takes longer.

Does anyone know what happens at this stage of boot process? Is it POST (Power On Self Test)?

Thank you

Well I managed to fix it. At least its working so far.

Im not sure what fixed it though - First think I did: I've checked my connection between GPU and PSU. Then I fixed Secure Boot problem I had in Windows - it was showing as Off in msinfo32 while it was On in BIOS (Had to change it to "custom" in BIOS and instal keys manually) and finally changed PCI settings from Auto to Gen2 in Bios as well. Tried cold booting several times and everything is perfect so far.

Ok - so all those issues were caused by Gigabytes issues with PCIe Gen3 implementation. Although my card (R9 285) is theoretically Gen3 - it will not work when setup as Gen3 in Bios. It probably doesnt matter that much though but is it something "fixable" through BIOS update? Or is this issue caused by the fact that my tiny GPU is factory overclocked? (its the SAPPHIRE R9 285 2GB GDDR5 ITX COMPACT OC Edition)

Thanks :)

Found a source of my problems. I had to turn X.M.P. On in Bios (Profile 1). Everything is fine so far.
