H97 board with 5th generation Core CPU
« on: November 17, 2015, 05:53:46 am »
I have a 5th generation Intel Core CPU: i5-5675C. Now I want to buy an H97 motherboard to work with it. I'm told that BIOS upgrade is needed to support the 5th generation CPU. But how can I tell if a board already has that upgrade before I buy it? Since I don't have an older 4th generation CPU, I do need the board to just work out of the box.
The seller told me they have a GA-H97M-D3H rev 1.1 motherboard, whose SN is 153850088372. But they don't know for sure whether it can work with the CPU.

You need BIOS F7 with GA-H97M-D3H rev 1.1 for i5-5675C CPU support.

Grab a USB drive and format as FAT32.  Place BIOS F7 on it.

You should be able to press <END> during POST and use Qflash to upgrade to F7 if the board you receive has F2 (shipping BIOS)

Honestly however, I'd op for a 4th gen CPU.  4790k about $40 more, or 4690k about $30 less.  Comparable performance in all areas except graphics.  4600 vs. iris 6200.  You lose hyper threading on the i5 4th or 5th gen.  A mute point.  Don't be fooled.  There is nothing special going from 22nm to 14nm die and a lower TDP.  Gaming performance is only marginally better and if you are using a dedicated GPU it doesn't matter.  Your choice of course  :)

Thanks a lot for your answer. So I still need a 4th gen CPU for the upgrade right?

Walked away, but added a little more to the post above.  I believe you can flash with newer CPU to F7 if needed.

Yeah I'm aware of the differences between these CPUs. But the Broadwell is what I got right now so I have to go with it. Thanks again for your good suggestions  :)
