I have not tried a different CPU yet.  I suppose that is my next attempt.  I was reading more on my mobo and learned that Slot 1 and Slot 3 make up Memory Channel 0 - and slot 2 and Slot 4 make up Memroy Channel 1.

I can make Channel 0 work with either one or two slots filled (Slot 1 and / Or Slot 3 work fine alone or together).  I cannot make Channel 1 work at all (will not post with memory installed in Slot 2 and / Or Slot 4).

At this point the only thing I can think is to try another CPU.  Is there anything else you can think of that would prevent one of the memory channels from functioning?  Perhaps power on the mobo (running Antec 750 watt PS) is bad?  Also have Nvidia GTX 465 graphics board installed.

Thanks!

To be honest, from what I am discovering about the AM3 CPU's I would be looking at that as the probable cause. Because the Memory Controller(s), there are actually 2 Memory Controllers on the CPU, are now on-board the CPU it is very rare for these kind of problems to be due to the motherboard.

When these problems occur, the last thing that most of us consider is that the CPU can be at fault, it has to be the Motherboard, PSU or something else but I would be trying another CPU (if you have one that you can use) to eliminate that as a cause of the problem. If you can then run with all 4 slots filled you know for certain that the CPU is the cause of your trouble. If it still doesn't work then it is probably the Mobo.

With these issues it is a process of elimination but, as I said earlier. you have already tried a different Mobo and RAM, to my mind that leaves the CPU and your PSU seems more than adequate to power your rig.

I am sure absic is absolutely right about the memory controller but to confirm this you could try removing all the ram apart form one stick in slot 2 and see if it will boot. If it doesn't then it is certain.

Nice forum and support!  Thanks for the suggestions and help.

The CPU was the problem.  I replaced it today with a like-in-kind new from the store (exchange old unit as defective) and it booted up instantly with all 8 GB memory installed.  No problems.

I guess for future reference the key was the fact that the motherboard (Rev 2.0) operates slot 1 and slot 3 as "channel 0" and slot 2 and slot 4 as "channel 1".  The CPU has dual channel memory controllers - so with hindsight 20:20 it makes sense that one memory controller was working (channel 0, which is why I could post with memory in slot 1 and / or slot 3) and one memory controller failed (why it would not post with memory installed in slot 2 and / or slot 4).

Again, thanks for the guidance.

No problem and pleased to have been able to help. It's just a shame that you have to go through all that grief for a dodgy CPU.

Almost identical to my issue on the GA 770TA UD3 MB...
Was easy to put the blame on the ram or MB. Especially when system ran fine with only 2 modules install in slots 1 & 3 and prime95 had no errors after 8hrs.
Absic115 testing was also a big help.
Of course it has been over 30 days for me, so I can't  get a replacement CPU from Newegg, so I am trying to see if AMD will exchange since it has 3yr warranty. I paid for it so I want one that works correctly.

That is the trouble(and I am sure why AMD and the motherboard manufacurers keep quiet about it) when people find out the truth they feel cheated and quite rightly so. The consumer likes to make an informed choice on where to spend their hard earned cash not to be lead along by hype.

Does anyone know of a Processor that will work with this MOBO and Corsair (4x2GB) 1333mhz CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 9-9-9-24 RAM. I am looking for a quad core 3.0 or above processor may be six core but at least 3.0 or above. thanks for any replies in advance.

You might try 2 sticks of 4GB. Works great for me - even over-clocked to 1600 Mhz.

The memory that worked for me is a matched pair of G.Skill DDR3-1333 PC3-10666 part F3-1066CL7D-8GBRH. 170$ at New egg in October 2011.

Thanks for the reply on the 4 GB of RAM. I think that the MOBO only allows for 2GB RAM per slot. Not for sure though off the top of my head if this is correct or not. I still would prefer a different CPU though leaving me with the option of using 4x4GB of RAM in the future if needed and possible. Anyone else have a suggestion for a replacement CPU that will work. Thanks in advance for any replies. :)

I have a 1090T giving the same symptoms you have, one of the IMCs has gone down. I'm now running 2X4GB XMS3, but without the advantage of dual channel. New 1090T coming next pay day.

Hi Ripshod,

When you get your new CPU send the dodgy one to AMD. They will check it out and if it proves to be faulty they should replace it.

As a matter of interest, have you been running your RAM at 1600MHz?

Hi, I have e-mailed AMD and they have approved an RMA on my CPU but they will not give me a different model CPU. Does anyone know if these CPU's(Phenom II 955 Black Edition 3.2GHZ Quad Core) work with this MOBO( GA-890GPA-UD3H ) and the 8 GB's of RAM(4x2GB)(Corsair XMS3 CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 1333MHZ). I am using it now with just 2x2 GB's of this RAM in Slots 1 and 3. I want to use all 4 sticks that I purchased. Thanks all for the replies.

Yes the 955be will work fine with this mobo and mem. My system was built exactly like that before cpu upgrade and memory timeing adjustments.
