GA-890FXA-UD5 SATA-Problem

GA-890FXA-UD5 SATA-Problem
« on: July 19, 2010, 01:12:17 pm »
I have a problem with the board:
Sometimes my keyboard (dinovo edge) is not recognized under win 7.
The OS tells me that it could not detect the USB-Port correctly and when this is the case, my SATA-HDD (Western Digital) has not been detected neither in the Bios, nor in win 7.
After I unplugged the logitech usb-dongle and put it back again everything seems to work fine.

The Board has already the newest Bios F3 and yes, I also tried different ports with the same sporadic problem.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Is the keyboard's USB dongle plugged directly into one of the USB ports of the motherboard or is it connected through a hub?

Do you know if your PC running in AHCI or Native IDE Mode?

Do you know which Western Digital Hard-drive you are using and if so could you post back with model type and size? (Black, Blue or Green)

Are you running the 32 or 64 bit of Windows 7 and which version are you running?

Did you build the PC or is it pre-built?

Hi
Well it could be two different problems because I don't see a link between them really.  I would advise checking the cables on the hard drive, both data and power.
The keyboard sounds more like a BIOS setting problem. Have you enabled USB devices etc? Does your wireless keyboard need any special drivers etc? Can you plug the dongle in at the front of the case?

Everything with USB is enabled in the Bios.
The keyboard does not need any drivers to work.
Hmm...I havent plugged the front USB-ports to the Mainboard yet.

Hi

Thanks for the answers. I agree with Dark Mantis that although the issues seem connected, I don't think that they are.

The problem of Western Digital hard-drives being dropped is one I have come across myself and the only solution I have come up with so far, is to run the system in IDE mode rather than AHCI. I'm not sure if this is a BIOS or hardware issue and have not yet been able to find a better answer, sorry.

The problem with the Logitec wireless keyboard is another one of those annoying issues that I don't think has a reliable answer or solution. I'm pretty sure this is a Windows 7 related problem as I have come across the same kind of thing with my Wacom Graphics Tablet. A few things you could try but there is no guarantee they will solve the problem for you.

Is the dongle plugged into the USB3 or a USB2 port try changing it to see if this cures it.

In System Configuration (msconfig) under Startup, find out what other services are starting when the PC starts and remove any that are not essential. (You don't say what Windows 7 version you are running only that it is 64 bit, but if it is Ultimate try switching off Bit-Locker, if you have it running)

Try changing the start-up mode for the wireless keyboard from automatic to delayed start. (not the best solution as your keyboard will be sluggish until it starts properly about 2-3 minutes after Windows has booted).

My apologies but I don't think there is an easy answer for this issue.

Well, I already tried different ports, without any success.

Sorry, I neglected to mention that I use Win 7 x64 Ultimate.

Anyway, thank you for your answers. If I wont be able to come to grips with the board, I guess I will have to return it.

Don't give up yet,

Someone else might have a solution that I'm not aware of, so give it a little while for someone else to pick up on this thread.

Another option would be to contact Gigabyte Tech Support as they may know the answer for you: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/technical-support.aspx

Well I can't say I have much to add to what absic has already said apart from there is a newer BIOS on the website. It seems the same for both revisions of the board ( I checked because you didn't say which one you had). It is a beta version but as it's on the website it must have been fairly well tested. You can get it here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3519#dl
Sorry I can't offer anything else at the moment.

A couple more things. How long have you had this setup? Did you load windows with this same setup of wireless keyboard etc? Have you disabled all the devices inthe BIOS that you don't need eg Serial and Parallel ports etc?

Well, I built in the mainboard last friday.
All the other devices like serial, parallel ports have been disabled.
Did you load windows with this same setup of wireless keyboard etc?
What do you mean?
I set up a clean windows after installing the mainboard.

Thank you for the hint with a bios, but it is, like you already mentioned, a beta bios.
Am I able to downgrade from the beta bios F4 to F3?

The BIOS should be downgradable if you need to. Have you made any changes in the BIOS or are they set to the optimised defaults(apart from the ones we have discussed)?

I only changed the RAM timings as they were not identified by their SPD in the BIOS.
I made some minor changes, like enabling PWM for the CPU-fan, turning off Firewire but nothing dramatically. I did not even overlock my CPU yet.

What is the USB Legacy Function used for?

Nothing that should affect you. It allows usb devices to be used in the DOS environment etc. Leave it to disabled.

Sorry DM, not quite right there. It actually enables USB storage devices such as USB Flash Drives, USB Hard/Floppy drives to be detected during POST and it should really be left to enabled, especially if you want to use QFlash from a Memory stick or such like.
