Please help! EX58-UD3R I can't update the BIOS from F9
« on: August 28, 2010, 11:02:27 pm »
Hi,

Please help me on this. I have been trying to update my BIOS from F9 to the F11 version. I have tried using QFlash with a USB flash drive, and a floppy disk and it will not flash for me at all. All I get is a "BIOS ID check error" whenever I try to flash. Does anyone have another idea of how I can get past this guys?  ???

I would recommend that you have downloaded the correct BIOS update for your board because the BIOS checksum error usually occurs when it is the wrong update.

Hi Dark. I downloaded that BIOS from the Gigabyte support site. GA-EX58-UD3R Rev. 1.0 which I found here http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2989&dl=1#ov One funny thing I will say is that when my comp. starts up, the BIOS screen lists my board as EX58-UD3R-SLI, but Gigabyte doesn't have a board listed with SLI listed in the title. If you would, can you go to the link I have here and check to see if that is the correct board? The box it came in says EX58-UD3R so I don't know what else to do.

Thanks

Is it possible to reset a BIOS back to it's original version? What I mean is, when a person resets a CMOS/BIOS, does that take it back to original? Sorry to sound that ignorant, but I can't seem to find anything online that addresses that or even tells a person how to do it. I am downloading the manual and see if it explains what that procedure is. Thanks guys.

I have just looked at the websites .com and .co.uk and they seem to tally with the BIOS information. As you say there is no board ending SLI.
You could try downloading the BIOS update from the UK site and see if it will work:

http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2989&dl=1#dl

To answer your later question, yes you can reflash back to an older version, there is no reason why not and in fact many have done it for one reason or another. There is nothing ignorant about asking a question. If you don't know it is the most sensible way to find out. Let me know if I can help further.

thanks for that Dark. Do you think it would be a good idea to reset my CMOS? Also, heres the strange thing, my board says its a Dual BIOS version, but according to the manual, the F8 key for QFlash isn't listed as Dual BIOS/QFlash utility when I enter the BIOS. I'm wondering if the dual bios portion of this board got messed up somehow. I have been trying to find the dual bios utility but I can't find it to download. If anyone has or seen the utility somewhere, please let me know so I can download it and see if it gets me out of this problem I have.

It is just coming to light that there is some problem with the DualBIOS and it is not resetting the main BIOS after a flash problem or when the primary BIOS get corrupted. Watch this space as they say.

irishbug, if post screen shows EX58-SLI then you have exactly this mobo, check the model markings on the pcb
and the only path for you is to use the -SLI bios for this particular mb.
after some longer search i have found it, look:

Have you tried @BIOS? It is a Gigabyte BIOS flash utility that runs under Windows, and will automatically detect your board and find the correct BIOS for you. I had the same problem as the OP once with my old GA-8S648FX Pentium 4 board using QFlash, before I upgraded to a GA-EP45-UD3R, and @BIOS never let me down on both boards!

Please don't say you're running Linux, I'll feel a right fool!

Not sure I would agree with your views on @BIOS.
I have seen this Gigabyte utility brick a lot of boards and personally I would not recommend using it under any circumstances.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Hi Bee, the post screen shows UD3R-SLI on bootup. That's after I disable the spalsh screen. If I posted earlier that it read  as an EX58-SLI, then I apologize for that. I just checked it and it is as I mentioned before, UD3R-SLI. So I'm not sure the link you posted will pan out. I'll head over there now and see and post back.

Thanks

Thanks it just makes things easier.

I would also like to add my disdain of this utility to absic's already made point. It is far to risky for my liking and have seen too many bricked motherboards from people using it . It is just too dangerous to try and flash the BIOS from within the OS.

No, I think I had this in my initial post. When I do a search using @BIOS, all the various servers list my board as an EX58-UD3R-SLI with F9 as the latest update. Which is strange because the gigabyte support site lists F12i (Beta) as the latest version available. I just took a peak at that link you posted for the SLI version and it really looks promising (interestingly enough, it lists F10i beta as the latest BIOS) but I wanted to also add this snapshot that shows what I have, according to the @BIOS utility. And I say this with no disrespect to anyone, but I know what a lot of people feel about the @BIOS utility, but I wanted to show an idea of what BIOS and board I have. I am cautious messing with the utility though.
