Just before we give up on your WD green drive have you got SMART reporting enabled in the BIOS for this drive? If so disable it and see if the drive responds.
Personally I would go for the Blacks. I don't like these Greens at all as I am sure you have guessed.  ;D They are slow, power down all the time and then you have to wait for them to power up when you want to use them. It is just WD getting on the "save the world" bandwagon. ::)

I have HDD SMART Capability set to "Disabled".  It was defaulted to this from initial startup and I haven't changed it.

I may just go ahead and remove the two 2TB Greens and buy two 1.5TB Blacks.

For now, I should be able to get my system going using the two 1TB WD blacks in a RAID0 configuration.

I should be able to add the two 1.5TB drives at a later time, right?  I do not intend on adding them to the RAID.  Just going to leave them as stand alone drives.

Also, absic sent me a PM about setting up TLER on the WD Blacks.  If I do this for the two 1TB drives now, will that affect the two drives that I add at a later time?

thanks

Hi there,

If you can enable TLER on your WD Black drives there will not be a problem for any other HDD's you later install.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

There is no problem in setting up and RAIDing the two drives and then adding more drives later as standalone data drives. The only problem you might have is your two Blacks are different models I seem to remember. This may be a stumbling block. To be fair I am no expert in RAID and if you need any real info you would be best talking to Pierre or Peter.

Damn, snuck in again!

The two Blacks are the same model, so I should be OK.

Hi there,

If you can enable TLER on your WD Black drives there will not be a problem for any other HDD's you later install.

I tried using the TLER tool you told me about (the iso bootable disk).  I created the disk just fine.  However, when I run the tool on my new machine, it says that no drives were found and that my raid controller may not be compatible with the TLER tool.

Do you know if there is a newer version of the TLER tool?  I can make a different bootable disk with the newer version.

**EDIT**  I didn't realize that you have set your drives back to IDE before running the TLER tool.  I did that and it worked.  Well, kinda.  It successfully turned on TLER on one drive but I get an error on the other drive.  Oh well, it was worth a try.

As I continue to get further and further from my original post (I just wanted to make sure I was connecting my SATA2 drives to the right ports on the mobo, lol)

I am trying to set the TLER to on for my two WD Black Hard drives.  I am able to set it on for one drive but not the other. I just wanted to let others know that may be having the same problem as me.

If you look at the DCM line on the label plate of your drive, if the last two letters end in "CA" then you can enable TLER on your drive.  I have one drive with CA and I can enable it with the TLER tool.  The other drive that I have ends in CB and I cannot enable it.

Here is an interesting link with a discussion on this.  Hopefully, I helped someone today with this as opposed to just using up everyone's time asking questions.
