Has USB3.0 of X58A-UD3R (Rev. 1.0) any problem?

By the way, do you think NEC USB 3.0 Host Controller and Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller are the same? I download the latest USB3.0 from the Gigabyte website:

To be honest I haven't heard it referred to as that before. It is a new one on me. Just Googled it and found that apparently they merged in March this year.

Fair enough although technically the Gigabyte motherboard will supply enough power through the USB3 port to run it no problem.
I take it the power supply part is working ok?

I measured the voltage of the power supply and it's 12.27V. Thus, the voltage is correct. But I'm not sure if it delivers enough current or not. However, I do hear the HDD spins when the power is on so I assume the voltage and the current are both ok.

For me it just looks like a kind of incompatibility between MB and this particular USB enclosure.

The firmware of USB 3.0 chip is included in MB's bios, so all you need is to upgrade main BIOS of the MB to the latest one (F6)

If this won't help then try to contact USB enclosure vendor (Hotway) for help (firmware/drivers update/...).
I haven't found this vendor in our list of USB 3.0 products:

I know for instance that the first external enclosures which has been tested with our MB's were from Bufallo.

It's also worth trying this Hotway enclosure with different HDD an / or with different USB 3.0 MB for checking.

Hi, i am the guy that you said i have the different problem also with usb 3, and you gave the link to my thread. To tell you the truth it seems to that we have the same problem, it is not that different. I also can not see my hard drive on my computer, and also under usb controller it shows the two renesas drivers that you mention. I dont think the problem lies neither with the hard drive nor with the enclosure enclosure or the cable...

I am saying this because i have a different enclosure (Manhattan) and different (i suppose) cable. The only difference in my case is that the hard drive turns on and off all the time (at least the external case's led does) and after doing it for several times, i get a BSOD. As onemillimeter said, the drive works fine when i connect it to a normal usb port.

Thus i conclude, it is either the chip (renesas) or its firmware, that has the problem.... Did you make any progress?

It does seem to be pointing that way but we really need more cases to confirm that this is indeed the cause.

I found one phenomenon as follows:

[1] If the USB3.0 enclosure is powered on when the computer reboot or start from "cold boot", then my system, so far, can detect the external HDD.

[2] However, if I disconnect the external HDD via the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to re-initiate the connection by powering off and on again the USB3.0 enclosure, my system could not detect the external HDD.

[3] It looks to me that the only way to detect the external HDD is to make sure the external USB3.0 enclosure is powered on before the computer starts. But this should not happen to any "Hot Swappable" and "Plug & Play" USB2.0 or USB3.0 devices.


The vendor of the USB3.0 enclosure confirmed the firmware of the USB3.0 enclosure is up-to-date.


Last point:
Updated to latest BIOS F6 and still no luck.

Yes. I enabled the USB Storage Devices already. I have another USB2.0 3.5" HDD Enclosure and it works fine with my system.

It sounds like the problem lies in the USB3 drivers which is part of the BIOS so maybe you will have to wait for a BIOS update to be released. I must say I had been waiting for this particular problem to arise ever since the boards came out. It was just a matter of time and people buying into the new standard before the troubles started. Let's just hope they are more easilly fixed than some of the previous ones.
