Well, as I said, I have asked the question but as I don't use e-SATA drives myself I'm not sure about their requirements.

My only experience with trying to use e-SATA wasn't very successful and I had to attach a separate power supply to the drive to get it to spin up and I was never able to get the drives to hot-swap.

Actually I think you could be quite correct there as when I received my board it came with a seperate eSATA panel connector as well as the ones on the rear panel and on this extra panel there was a power port along with two SATA ports. It  was also supplied with a Y cable to fit this outlet. As I don't have any eSATA drives I haven't used it.

"Thank you for your kindly mail and inquiry. About the issue you mentioned, the eSATA/USB Combo port does power supply. Please first make sure that you had already change the Onboard ESATA Mode to AHCI then you may need to re-install the OS and driver again for this function.

I did as instructed and it did not work..yes I changed bios then reinstalled the os (win 7 64bit)

In that case I would update your question with GGTS and inform them of their error and see what they say.

I got this reply from Gigabyte:

It depends on what kind of eSATA device is being used. If the eSATA device does not need an additional power source, then it can be detected after pluging into the back panel eSATA port. An example of such a device (eSATA without additional power) is: iMate eSATA SSD 32GB

So as a Hard drive needs an additional power source, that is why it doesn't work.

I have also been informed that Gigabyte have been asked to modify the description on the website to make things clearer.

Ahhhhh I hope that is the bottom line! I have tried everything under the sun (on and off) this week! Now I am wondering what on earth is the 'delock' cable good for! I did investigate the interior of the on-board port today and could not see any outer metal sheath for the 'gold' contacts (on the edges) to make contact with and to receive power. Good to hear GB will do something about the rather misleading (grey) information. I am 30 odd $s the wiser now..that MB keeps getting more expensive! Otherwise it seems to be a very fine board! Thanks all for your assistance.

For clarification purposes it has been established  these ports are NOT 'Power over' eSATA but powered to a degree by the USB component oin them?
Please correct me if I am wrong.
