GA-P35T-DQ6 Boot Select

GA-P35T-DQ6 Boot Select
« on: November 24, 2010, 11:18:36 am »
I need to 'lock down' a PC so that it will only boot from its Hard Drive (unless you go into the BIOS) and change the boot devices.  The Hard drive is encrypted and needs to be secure.

Many Thanks

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte UK Forum.

Do I take it that the techs there at MI5 have forgotten how to do it? ;D

The best way is to go into the BIOS and disable all the boot devices except for the HDD that you want to use and then set a password for the BIOS so that nobody can change your settings ( and no "God" is not a good one to use). You can also set up a password for booting if you want to go to that much trouble.

I have set up a BIOS password and that's working but the 'splash' screens both show press <F12> to select Boot and can still boot from CD so I want to turn off the F12 ability.

To be honest I am not sure that it is possible to disable the F12 option without actually changing the coding.

The only possibility is to go into the First/Second/Third Boot Device in the BIOS and make sure that CDROM is set to disabled.

You should be able to stop anyone else booting the computer at all with a System Password in the BIOS.

Don't know weather to be  :( or  :o, It's not a desperate requirement (we arn't MI5) but encrypting Hard drives is going to become important for us in the next few months, mostly on laptops but we will need to do a few Desktop's.

I have the Hard drive as the only boot device in BIOS but the F12 gets rond it all, it's a nice option to have normally but I could really do with stoping a hacker using Linux or another OS to get into my Windows Encrypted Hard Drive.

Do you know if any Gigabyte mother boards can be locked down like this ?
