New PSU ... Too Much Choice

  To one and All........need some input.

  Wow!.... It's only been a couple of years since I purchased my last PSU.......now I look and there's literally hundreds and 20+ in the "Highly Recommended/ Extreme Performance" Range.......

  The 12V rail in my present PSU will drop to as low as 8V under any load now.....amazed it will boot at all

  These are the ones I've been looking at as I need to order it today....not much time for research.....hence the post for input

As you say there are many to choose from. Personally I like the Corsair but that is not to say that they are particularly better than many others.

What PSU did you have before ? Was it not still under warranty ? Most PSUs are guaranteed for 3 or more years nowadays.

 Mmmmmm!....Toughpower Modular 750W......5 yr warranty from 2007 so it covered regardless.........but never dealt with Thermaltake with RMA before ..... got this originally  due to 60Amp over 4 x 12v rails

  Can't find a number to talk to anyone!

  Do I want a 750W unit going back in when I feel I need a 850W minimum

  How long could the RMA process be?

This question comes up a lot at the AMD forum I frequent.  
These are the most recommended brands of PSU.

Corsair / Seasonic / Enermax / PC&C / Zippy / .

Seems a single +12v rail is better than multi railed units.
 I can vouch for Corsair,I have 3 of them.1 in my machine and the others in my kids pc's.

Dead silent and never a problem in 3 years. Plus they have a 5 year warranty.

That OCZ 10000w looks very capable,single rail @ 82 amps.

I'm not sure about Be Quiet psu's..

IMO overkill is better. Go for an 850 or more. Room for future upgrades.

you're going about this the wrong way. All you really need is a Hamster, one running wheel, some copper wire and magnets plus a plentiful supply of sunflower seeds to keep said hamster fed!

Joking aside, I am also pretty much hooked on Corsair PSU's but I have used other makes. Thermaltake do have a generally good reputation as do Seasonic.

As to how much power you need only you can relly say for certain, according to the people who know my Corsair 620 Watt is supposed to be on the light side but it has taken everything I can throw at it and not fallen over. A steady voltage supply is as important as the amount of juice being thrown out and, as with all things, financial constraints will also be a factor in your final choice. If you believe that you need at least 850 Watts then don't be to tempted to go lower as you will only have the added burden of not being confident in your PSU.

Hi two things Allan. The first being that your original PSU is under warranty to get it replaced/repaired anyway as it gives you a spare/backup unit for anytime you might need it.

Secondly have a look at the same power supply that I am using in one of my machines the Corsair HX850W. Absolutely brilliant and to top it all off it comes with a seven(yes 7 years) years warranty!! Just shows how much faith Corasir has in it.

  Be-leave in Deja vu....... just two minutes ago decided on the "Corsair Professional Series Gold AX850 Power supply - 850 Watt"  (Modular)... I think I found one for 111 pounds +ship.......and yes....RMA for a spare...... the TAKE has been a pretty good PSU to be honest..........man Ive cranked that thing till it smoked I recon

  Thanks for the sounding board.......I need to order this ASAP ... probably a good thing .... to much time spent researching .... I'd probably change my mind several more times in the next week and end up ordering the first choice.......as per usual!

Yes it is a cracking piece of kit, I would have bought it myself but it wasn't released to market until a couple of weeks after I bought my HX850W. I notice that the AX series only carries a 5 year warranty as opposed to the HX series which has a 7 year warranty.
