Which SATA Controller for this None-RAID setup. (Z68X-UD3H-B3)
« on: September 15, 2011, 03:44:57 pm »
I've just bought two 128GB SSDs (both of which are 6Gb/s), which I want to install on Z68X-UD3H-B3.

I don't really want to raid them, I want them as two isolated partitions/drives.

At the moment I've connected them to the SATA3_0/1 connectors, not the GSATA Marvell connector.
Is there any benefit in me moving them over to the GSATA connector?
The manual says that both 0/1 and GSTATA 5/6 are 6Gb/s connectors.

Should I move them?

Hi there,

in a word no.

That applies to moving them to the Marvell ports as you will find that the SSD's will work better on the other controller.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

For your information:
I actually use both sata3 ports of the Marvell controller on my GA-Z68X-UD3P-B3 motherboard for two HDD's in RAID-1.

These ports are limited to a data transfer speed of 5 Gb/s.
This can bottleneck fast sata 3 SSD's.

The Intel sata3_0 and sata3_1 ports are working at 6 Gb/s and known to be faster for sata 3 SSD's.
I agree to keep your SSD's connected at the Intels ports.

Please set your sata controller within the bios to AHCI for optimal functionality and performance, not IDE.

You can also set it to RAID and then within Windows using the Intel Rapid Storage Driver on AHCI mode.
This is called a RAID-ready system which means you run in AHCI mode but can change to RAID later if you want.
However if it's already set to AHCI in the bios you can not switch to RAID easily without reinstalling Windows or applying some registry hacks.

The advice you have been given by the other members is spot on and certainly your best way to configure your drives. As has been mentioned do make sure that you have them as AHCI mode in the BIOS as this will make a huge difference from IDE mode.
