FX-8120 Doesnt work in AM3+ GA-78lmt-s2p (R3.1) properly.
« on: November 03, 2011, 10:31:05 am »
Iv been using this motherboard (78lmt-s2p r3.1) with the latest bios (currently F4) with my 1090T overclocked to 4.2ghz perfectly for the past 2 months (after adding aftermarket mosfet cooling).
Today I finally got my 8120 processor and have installed it but it doesn't work correctly with this mother board even tho its AM3+ and advertised as supporting 81XX series chips.

Loading everything up as default by resetting the CMOS causes the computer to restart when every there is any load on the cpu.
It also picks up the stock voltage wrong. First boot it picks it up at 1.42V, Restart then it will pick it up as 1.28V. Restart again and it will be somewhere between those until I do a cold reboot then its back to 1.42V.

Disabling the power saving features has no effect at all on the cpu. It still changes P states and eventually causes the screen to go funny colours and freezes when turbo core kicks in (its been disabled in bios tho)

I managed to get it running stable by using a in windows program to edit the P states so that they are all running the chip at 2.8ghz. This is the highest I can get it to run stable at 1.3V higher voltage doesn't make any difference  it restarts the pc after 5mins of load at any higher frequency.
No BSOD just a quick restart.

The NB and HT link speeds jump around the place as well. It jumps between 2200mhz and 800mhz.
Setting this to anything other then auto in the bios Stops the boarding POSTing and the battery has to be removed for 2mins before it will turn on again.

Will be testing the cpu in my mates Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 tomorrow to rule out the cpu being faulty.

Id really love to keep this motherboard with this cpu since it fits perfectly into my media center case so is there going to be another bios update for it to support this cpu correctly or is the 1090T its limit?

On a off topic note the 8120 does run bf3 more stable and 2fps higher average fps rate then the 1090t did overclocked.

Thanks
Regards

Hi there,

I think you need to contact Gigabyte Support about this here: http://ggts.gigabyte.com/tech.asp?ClassID=2&Country=New%20Zealand&SourceWeb=B2C but please expect several days before you get a reply.

I just had a quick look at the CPU support list for your motherboard and sadly the 8120 isn't there! http://uk.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=3833  :o and this could be the problem
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Thanks for the reply.
Iv already contacted them and waiting on a email.

It looks like they have changed the support list since I first bought the board and looked at it.
Use to say FX-81XX and 125W but now only FX-8100 95W.

Gutted this is a really nice board.

Which is useless since I already said I had done all those things and that I have the latest bios.

Any way took the chip to my mates and it works perfectly in his mobo, Havnt pushed it hard but have gotten it to 4ghz on 1.3V.
Will see what its really capable of over the weekend. Hoping for a 4.5-4.6 with less then 1.45V
