As absic said that certainly looks like it has been badly produced in the factory. Now with a better picture it is clear as day.

Hi been in touch with scan they want the board back ( never heard of this problem before) they said they will test the board and if it is faulty they will replace it as to the processor they don't know what will happen about that, i did explain that it is brocken because of the motherboard but i will have to see.

I have to say that I use SCAN UK quite a lot for PC components and they have always been very fair when it comes to problems with faulty items.
You might have a few issues when it comes to getting a replacement CPU though as they could say that you broke it by trying to force it into the motherboard socket.

As a matter of interest, did you get the CPU &  Motherboard from Scan and did you take out the Scansure insurance when you bought the items?  If you did I think this should cover you in these circumstances. Of course, it would only apply to items you bought from Scan and if you got the CPU from another supplier then it won't be covered.

Hi absic115 yes I use scan quite a lot and untill now I have had no problems with any items i bought, the processor is just under a year old and yes i did take out  the insurance on it and i ran it in my previouse mobo with no problems, and the mobo is just over the month since i bought it 5/8/2010 but through problems i didn't get round to building the system till the weekend.

Ah, sods law isn't it. Sadly the Scansure only runs for 28 days so no cover there.

I think he should get the CPU replaced because it was as a direct result of the faulty item(board) and it would be hard to use excessive force as a defence because the CPU could be damaged by very little force at all.

Hi not good news checked e-mails  scan recieved the mobo today and tested it but found no fault, i have to get in touch with them , maybe i will sudgest sending the chip to them to test as they both came from scan, well this day has started with a downer.

Well I have to say that I'm very surprised by that.

I have just double checked your photograph and it definitely looks as if the socket has a raised ridge in the middle and, when I compare it to the couple of AM3 boards I have access to, it doesn't look the same.

The only thing that I can now think of, is if a couple of the CPU pins had been moved slightly out of alignment when you removed it from the other board. If they had it could have produced the problem of wobbling and not fitting that you describe but the only time I have had this happen it has been pins on the outside of the CPU that have been damaged, not the ones nearer the middle.

It might be worthwhile sending your CPU to SCAN, as you suggest, as they would then be able to diagnose the problem properly.

Hi contacted scan and talked to the engineer and the person that RMAd the board and according to them the raised rectangle is supposed to be there and they tried another AM3 chip and it fell in straight away and booted up with no problems, so they are sending the board back to me, but they did give me the number of AMD and told me to contact them and tell them the problem and they might replace the chip, as they at scan have heard of Intel replacing chips. I can only try or else it means getting another chip from scan as i would stil trust them, again keep your fingers crossed I am going to get my knee pads out again.

I know I am not the AMD expert but I have had them in the past and have seen many motherboards and I can't say that I have ever seen a raised oblong in the centre of the socket. Very strange.
