Motherboard X58A-UD9 New Build Won’t Start
« on: October 02, 2010, 05:11:08 pm »
Motherboard: X58A-UD9
Graphics Card:  ATI Radeon HD5970 4GB memory.
CPU: Intel Core i7 980X.
Memory: Corsair 6GB TR3X6G1600C8D
PSU: Thermaltake 1200w Toughpower {Cable Management}.
Swiftech: Cooling System
Hi all hope you can help built a new system and its water cooled when I hit the start button the system will start and then stop and keeps on doing so. The system doesn’t even get to post and there are no bleeps coming from the case speaker, have removed the memory and still the same thing happens then I removed the GPU and still the same I even changed the case speaker. I was thinking it may be the PSU but can’t say for sure hope you can help and point me in the right direction many thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Well the first thing to do is check out this video and then follow the directions to test your PSU.

Post back after you have tested it with the results.

Hi thanks for the info…… I have watched the video and have tested the PSU and it seems to be working fine I have moved the jumper to different black wires in the 24 pin socket with the green as the common just to double check so I’m at a bit of a loss as to what is happening it’s all in a new case a cooler master HAF X so I don’t suppose there is a issue with the wiring in the case? Hope you can help thanks.

I am sure we can work out the problem, just sometimes takes longer thean others.

The minimum you really need to have is motherboard/CPU/heatsink/fan/one memory stick/buzzer/PSU to try and boot.
Make sure that all the power connections are properly made(dont forget there are extra ones on your UD9).

What BIOS version are you running?

You did remember to apply thermal paste when installing the heatsink/waterblock on the CPU?

Ok I'll give it a go I don’t know what bios the board is running on as I haven’t been able to get to post to have a look so I assume its the one that come with the board. Yes I did apply thermal paste to the water block so I hope things are ok there.

I asked about the BIOS to make sure that your CPU was compatible with your motherboard. Although on the CPU Compatibility list it says that it is from F1 BIOS I think that may be a mistake as the other Gulftown chip is F2 onwards so I would expect you CPU to be the same.

If you still have problems with it I would suggest building it up outside of the case first. I know it's a bit more bother with watercooling but I think it will be worth it.

Make sure that you observe anti-static precautions.

Lay some cardboard or something similar that is non-conductive on the worktop and remove the motherboard/CPU/heatsink/fan/buzzer/one stck of memory and PSU from the case and put it on the cardboard. Now I know you haven't got any graphics but try and boot. The system should try and then fail emitting a series of beeps. Please post what sounds it makes. Also what code is displayed on the LEDs.

Have put into action your thoughts from your last post  but still no joy in getting the computer to boot to post have double checked the connections and all ok. I have also tried to change over the connections from the front panel + & - to the mouther board just in case the wiring is not correct. Still getting the start stop signal from somewhere only way to stop it is to keep your finger on the start button and depress it.

Personally I think that in that case I would suspect the BIOS not supporting the CPU could well be the problem. The trouble is you would need a supported CPU to enable you to update the BIOS. If you can't get access to one try the local service and see if they can do the update for you.

Hi you were spot on when you said that the bios didn’t support i7 980x lucky for me I still had my old i7 965 installed that and it booted first time and the bios on the board is F1. I will update the bios as soon as I can figure out how to get the board to recognise the 2xSATA drives in RAID 0 running on Win 7 64bit. As this is the first Gigabyte board I’ve had I’m struggling a bit with this hope you can help out with this one. I must say I'm really impressed with the forum and the help you’ve given me thanks very much.

Well looks like we're getting there. All good fun isn't it?  ;)

Firstly I would like to point out that it is no use trying to get a RAID0 array to work on the SATA3 ports controlled by the Marvell 9128 chip. So if you are trying that then give up.

If you check out the back of your manual you will find it step by step listed there.

http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-x58a-ud9_e.pdf

just in case you don't have it to hand.

SATA 0 and SATA 1 are the best ports to use as they are under the Southbridge an Intel ICH10R controller chip and in our tests will actually run faster than the SATA3 Marvell ports.

I just thought, you aren't running two Western Digital Black SATA3 6Gbs drives are you?

That's fine then. It's just that the new Blacks aren't RAID friendly.
