Installed GIGABYTE On/Off Charge, now my computer will not shut off!

Hi again!

Ok, the GIGABYTE On/Off Charge feature looked so good I thought I would give it a try.  I think it was a big mistake...

After installing the GIGABYTE On/Off Charge feature, I noticed a number of strange things occur...

1. Somehow, another program called "Update Manager 32-bit" installed itself as well [and what is really strange about this, it appears in my control panel, but NOT in my "Add/Remove Program" feature of Control Manager.

2. My computer will not shut off now [all lights stay on and HD light shows HD is working it's bottom off].

Special Note: I am wondering if my Enermax Infiniti 720 PSU might have something to do with this...this PSU has a special function called "Cool Guard" which causes System Fans, CPU Fan, etc. to keep running for 1-3 minutes after shut down...

According to Enermax, they say this about the CoolGuard: The new patent feature, running not only PSU fan after shutdown, but all system fans to get the heat out of the system and increasing system lifetime by up to 20%.

It also has a feature called "Power Guard."  Not sure if this had something to do with it too...

There is more about these features here: http://www.enermaxusa.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_52&products_id=118

Can anyone help me on this?

I uninstalled the GIGABYTE On/Off Charge feature but my system still will not shut down unless I turn off the power button on the PSU in the back...

Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My system was working perfect just prior to this blunder on my part!

Hi Soar,

These add on programs can be a pain in the a*** especially if you don't get the use out of them. Did you really need to install this or was it simply a case of "well let's try it"?

You know what I always say ...If in doubt, leave it out!

Problem is these things are often easier to put on the system than remove. Does it show up in the Start Menu either? If it does maybe there is an uninstall routine attached.

I haven't tried this at all as I don't have anything that requires it to charge so I don't really know that much about it. As far as I am aware though the program works alright normally so I expect that your diagnosis is correct regarding the PSU. I always thoiught the power shut off delay was a good idea but it seems not in this case.

I will scan for viruses and other malware just in case something was attached to the file.  Then, I'll try a system restore to an earlier point in time.  Hopefully that'll do it!

GIGABYTE On/Off Charge is not supported with some early BIOS versions for both motherboards listed in your signature. An easy way to check what BIOS version your motherboard has is to run CPU-Z and click the on the mainboard tab and read the BIOS version.
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

The update manager is a downloadable Gigabyte utility that updates the Gigabyte On/Off Charge utility via the internet.
1) GA-Z97X-Gaming 7, G3258,
2) GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev. 1.1, FX-8350
3) GA-AM1M-S2P, Sempron 3850 Kabini

Tiger, thanks for the input.  I did install the most recent BIOS in this system before I installed the OS [F6A].  Thanks for helping me understand what the update manager is all about.

I am not sure what is causing the problem.

I did just run extra malware scans and came up clean as a whistle...so I do not think that is the issue.

Not sure what happened...

I think I will severely limit my downloading and usage of Gigabyte's software in the future...

In the past their overclocking software has also caused me great trouble [Easy Tune 6].

Special Update: after uninstalling the GIGABYTE On/Off Charge and running Crap Cleaner, my system is able to be shut down again [Whew]!

I do not understand why sometimes Gigabyte's software works wonders and at other times it causes untold problems [example: of the two times I installed Easy Tune 6, once it worked wonders and the other time it was the worst nightmare].  It is kinda like playing Russian Roulette  ??? ??? ???...since I do not like the risk involved, I will abstain in the future.  For me, it is not worth the risk!  :-\

Hopefully Gigabyte will soon get a clue  :o and rewrite the software so it can be reliable, trustworthy, and stable...until then, I am steering clear of their offered software!

Taken the silly old bugger long enough though DM.
How many times have we said "Don't install anything other than the basic drivers?" But do they listen? Do they heck!!!!
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

DM, I know, I know!  You know what really got me?  One of the biggest advertisements for this 890XA-UD3 was its ability to triple charge through the USB jacks...well, between my wife and I, we have a number of electronics [IPOD, Cell phones, etc.] that would greatly benefit from a fast charge...

So, I threw caution to the wind and paid for it....I think I trust people and companies toooo much!  Gigabyte should at least put the following words in fine print on the box: "The USB triple charge ability of this Motherboard would work excellent if we designed stable software to run it!  Since our software is full of bugs and thugs, we recommend you not use it!"

And on their Easy Tune 6 they should state: "Use at your own risk.  After installing ET6, many people experience BSOD's, terrible instability issues, fits of rage and anger, depression, deep regret and accompanying migraine headaches.  We recommend you not use it if you are prone to violence, bouts of depression, and general overall confusion!"

DM, I forgot to ask you...did you install a fan controller in your HAF 932?  If yes, which brand did you use?  And last, but not least, where did you purchase the metal filters?

Jannie,

I am not sure...perhaps the Brain Synapse Computational Capacity diminishes as we get older?

I think it is either that or its because the synaptic connections in my neurons are no longer firing as fast or as frequently as in years past...

Not sure which one it is...

Hi Soar
Have you tried updating your BIOS to the latest version.... ;D

Actually I did but seperate ones but they are just in the process of being replaced by a six fan controller that fits in the front bay. Lamptron are bringing out a very nice one soon that is touch screen and will run up to 30W per channnel. Should be out around Christmas for around $70. It's called the Lamptron FCT. You can see a review of it here:

http://www.azcs.co.uk/content.php/178-Lamptron-FC-TOUCH-Review

I got my screens/filters from this company that I always use for my fans, cooling parts etc and they are absolutley top notch but I am not sure if they will deliver to the States. Try asking Mick the owner or Alison, you will find them both very helpfull.

http://www.candccentral.co.uk/Koolance.html?sort=orderby

Actually I am just waiting for them to get the fan controller in.
