990FXA-UD5 - 5 GPU - won' recognize 5th!
« on: April 12, 2013, 06:55:25 pm »
Hi
I have a
-Gigabyte 990fxa-ud5
-5 x sapphire dual x 7950s (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102963 )
-AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz
-CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB 240-Pin DDR3
-cooler master 1200w psu (gold standard)
-64gb ssd
-win 7

I have 5 x 16x to 16x risers, and i have them plugged in to 2 - 16x, 2 - 4x, and then ive narrowed down the 5th, non working one to be the 8x slot (there is also a 1x slot avail).
When all are plugged in, the device manager recognizes all 5, but 1 of them has a yellow ! mark and gives the windows code 43 error (windows stopped this device because it has reported problems)
I have disabled everything in the bios that I do not need (front usb, firewire, extra sata slots etc...)
I have some 1x to 16x risers on the way... if I connect that 5th card in the 1x slot using the 1x to 16x riser should that solve my issue?
Also, do I have enough ram for all my cards? I think I read somewhere that I might need more ram for all the cards I am trying to run?
Thanks for the help guys!

Hi there,

funny I hadn't come across anyone wanting to use 5 GPU's but your the second user in as many days trying/thinking of doing this on the same motherboard! http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,12244.0.html

Have you checked if the X8 slot works OK without the other GPU's installed?
If yes, at what point, when adding other cards, does it fall over?
Can you try running a live version of Ubuntu (or similar) to see if it is a windows/driver issue?
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

I am a little confused, this motherboard only supports 3-way crossfire/sli
as mentioned below in the text from Gigabytes information on the board, is 5 gpu's a new thing? I have never seen more than 4 on any board.

(from Gigabyte site)

Flexible graphics capabilities - Up to 3 VGA cards are supported for either 3 way CrossFire™ or 3-way SLI™ action (running at two x16 or three x8 bandwidth), delivering the ultimate in graphics performance for gaming enthusiasts who demand the highest frame rates without compromising on resolution.
Note: Please update the latest version of BIOS from GIGABYTE website and VGA driver from vender’s website.

maybe the next questions is if there's a motherboard that can support 5 gpus today? I haven't seen one either..  ???

A little investigation (googling :) ) shows me that such systems can be built for compute power (read bitcoin mining)
and that Linux is the way to go, as it is indeed custom drivers that are used to achieve the build.
Hence the gpu's are all running independently of each other, as its just their processing power that is required.

Windows may well be the sticking point here.

I have the same mainboard and have 5 R7950s running. The problem is the AMD GPU driver you are running I bet. I tried a bunch of AMD drivers and can get only 4 GPU working unless I use the 12.6 drivers.

If windows can see all 5 GPUs without the AMD driver then you will be able to get 5 running with the 12.6 driver. There are people that can get up to 6 to show in windows. I tried six but I just settled for 5 until I decide to shuffle  risers cards around again.

I have the same problem but I cannot get the 6th card to play. With Win7 it only seems to recognize 4 of a single kind of board, for me at least. I started by installing 4 7970s in slots 1-4 on my 990FXA-UD5 with powered risers. Runs great. Shut down and installed a 5830 in the 1x PCIe slot using a powered 1x-to-16x riser. Runs great. Shut down and installed a 5970 in slot 5 with an unpowered 16x riser, and nothing. Swapped places with the 7970 in slot 4 it installed 5970 drivers but did not recognize the 7970 in slot 5.

I set First Graphics Card as PCIe slot 5 in the BIOS but that did not help with or without a monitor plugged into slot 5 7970. Next I'm going to try moving that 7970 to the PCI slot using a PCI-to-PCIe adapter card, which works fine on other MBs with less than 5 cards.

If you figured this out I'd sure appreciate knowing how you did it. I don't know a lick of Linux so I hope the only solution is not a new OS.
Cheers, Aurum

BTW, it sounds like you're BTC mining. If so, 1x PCIe adds nothing as 1x works fine. I'm using GA-990FXA-UD3 from now on and running 4 or 5 graphics cards depending on PSU, saves $45 on a MB. I have to use a pair of PSUs to get the 1500 watts. If I get the sixth card running I'll probably start tripping my home 15 amp circuit breakers.

For SHA256 mining RAM needs are small. OTOH, for scrypt mining, e.g. LTC, you need lots of RAM.

Ok so I've got the exact same problem as this.
I'm trying to give my 970 some breathing room by putting the 2nd card in the 5th slot, the 8x one. The fans spin up but that's about it.. did Gigabyte just bluff us and put a dud PCIE slot in number 5? :-)

I've an 8350 and running sli already on 1st and 3rd slot but the 5th seems dead.
The 4th slot 4x works fine, it just wont do sli, being 4x and all that.. or so I hear..

Anybody find a solution to this?

**EDIT**

Found the solution..
It was the PCIE configuration in advanced options in the bios (CTRL+F1). Changed it from 16x to 8x+8x.
I guess the fact that it was set to 16x meant that the bus lanes for the 5th slot were being used by the 3rd slot.

A little investigation (googling :) ) shows me that such systems can be built for compute power (read bitcoin mining)

There are dedicated bitcoin asic (application specific intergrated chips) that are many more times efficient at doing this over a gpu.

for example a gtx 680 runs 100w and will do 120 mhashes/sec  and an TerraHash Klondike 64 will do 18,000  mhashes/sec at 120w  making the significantly more cost effective and more likely to mine a bitcoin.

Using gpu's would consume more money in power than they make from mining bitcoins, I guess if you are living at home with your mum and she pays the power it would be worth it :-)
