GA-Z97X UD5H F9 BIOS Problem Windows will not start
« on: August 12, 2015, 03:15:11 pm »
Hi,

I updated my BIOS from within Windows to version F9, and now it will no boot properly again.

All I get is a blank screen with a mouse cursor.

What can I do?
The machine will boot into Windows via Safe Mode.
I have a saved copy of the BIOS on my SSD.
I now know that you can't rollback F9 (Something that it didn't say in the BIOS utility)
I have tried loading the optimised BIOS defaults, but the problem still persists.

The fact that Windows can load and I can get into the BIOS doesn't point to a BIOS malfunction, or does it?

Could it be a Windows related issue, or maybe a BIOS setting that is preventing it from loading?

Thanks

1.Supports Intel 5th Generation Core Processors. Either of the two 5th Generation Core Processors, the Core i5-5675C and Core i7-5775C are supported.
2.The F9 BIOS version prohibits updating to earlier version BIOS.

Do you have Core i5-5675C or Core i7-5775C installed?

The problem doing it in windows is you might run into problems like you are having. What you can try is shut it down pull the plug. Pull out the battery & jump out cmos pins. Wait about 15 mins and un-jump the cmos pins put the battery back.

Boot up the computer and now set it to default setting. Reboot and the go in setup the bios. Don't forget to set time & date too.

I'm not saying just you, but a lot people like taking the easy root by doing it in windows. I wish MB companies would stop doing that. The bios is one update that should be the most careful thing you update on a motherboard.

The motherboard does have two BIOS chips. The backup BIOS can be switched on, however it is not upgradable to a different version.

You may be interested in buying a replacement BIOS chip.

You should tell them your motherboard revision number and the BIOS version you want installed on the chip.

No, I have the Intel Core i5 4670K CPU.

How do I go about jumping the Pins?

Can I restore from the backup BIOS?

Thanks

Wow something strange happened.

I decided to remove any unnecessary cables including my second monitor, and then the Windows login screen appeared on my main display!

So, I logged into the PC and checked my BIOS version. It says that I am running F9. :bounce:

So the installation must have went ok.

I was unsure, but I had a feeling that it wasn't anything to do with the BIOS. Because I could go into the BIOS, boot and boot into Windows SAFE MODE ok.

Surely if it have been the BIOS then the machine wouldn't have even passed the POST stage.

I've now updated the display drivers, and re-configured the dual monitor setup.

Everything appears to be ok, and all I need to do now is go back into the BIOS and adjust my RAM speed.

Lesson learned, and I will not be rushing to update my BIOS in a flash again lol.

GIBABYTE really need to warn people about updating to F9 through Windows!!!!!

The warnings are present about the update on their website, but not through the @BIOS utility. :fou:

Thanks

GIBABYTE really need to warn people about updating to F9 through Windows!!!!!

I have been updating bios for almost 20 yrs. In that time I have had only one that went bad. I have used the windows a couple of times because I had too. I had a EVGA board one time that had 3 bios.

You could switch between all 3 by a switch on the board. The first bios was bad. Booted the computer on the 2nd bois. Switch it to the 1st bios and update in windows. But again I cross my fingers and it work.

When it comes to bios update I'm still old school. I'll always do it with in the bios, Flash drive or really old the 3-1/2 floppy. Once it is done I'll always shut it down clear the cmos and pull the battery.

Updating a bios is a really touch and go kind of update. I will not update a bios unless I'm really having a problem. Because it is there doesn't mean you have to do it. Plus that goes with driver updates too.

I have a saying about updates. If is isn't broke don't fix it.

I completely agree with what you are saying.

I've been working in IT for over 12 years, and have never come across anything like this before.

I don't tend to mess around in the BIOS of machines.

If it works don't try to fix it.

Updates and drivers are a continual pain in my job.

But this one threw me for a while as I have never used the @BIOS utility before.

We live and learn.

midimanuser ,
And now that you have recovered you system, switch BIOS 2 off.  Use the switches (top right corner) on board.  If needed disable BIOS 1 and enable 2 for recovery should something like this happen again.  I'm still running F8 with 4th Gen CPU.  You can run F9 with any CPU the board supports safely.  As dmdilks pointed out, do not use @BIOS to update your BIOS in windows.  Always QFlash.  I'm never going to put a Broadwell processor on this board, so my BIOS 2 will always be F8 regardless of what BIOS 1 becomes.  And honestly unless something changes dramatically, there is no reason to flash.

Are there instructions for on how to do this online?

I can't seem to find any info from Gigabyte about their dual bios recovery procedures.

Thanks
