Z87X-UD4h: Wont boot after bios update

I just updated the bios to the latest on the official Gigabyte site, f10b (noticed there is a newer version from the BIOS beta thread here, will wait for your input before flashing that though - F10 with a newer date) and now it will only occasionally boot. I used the qflash utility and made sure to reset to optimized defaults after the update. My boot order is correctly set and I made sure ACHI was set as well.

I would say 7/10 times my machine will boot to the Windows 10 loading screen (blue windows logo and rotating dots loading circle) and then just says no display input on my monitor.

2/10 times I will get a screen that says "Your PC did not start correctly" and gives me the option to Restart or go into Advanced Options.

1/10 times I can boot normally if I continue to press delete during the Windows loading screen and I get to my desktop like normal. Once I am in, everything seems fine until I have to reboot.

Specs

Cpu - Intel Core i5 4670K
Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD4H
GPU - EVGA GTX 1070 FTW
RAM - CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1600
Boot drive - SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series 256GB
Storage - WD 1TB and 2x 640GB drives in a Windows software RAID (Dynamic striped volume)
OS - Win 10 Pro 64bit
PSU - Corsair TX750W

See page 22 of your manual and use the BIOS_SW to isolate and start the system from the second BIOS.  Once you configure and save, you can determine of the issue is with the primary BIOS (revision, bad flash or other fault)

Thanks for the reply. F10b seemed to be a bad revision, flashed the newest F10 from the TT bios beta thread with qflash and booting problem went away!

However I now have created a different problem in return. System was up and running with no problems, rebooted several times to make sure. I started messing around with some of the BIOS settings and now upon reboot my monitor says no signal detected. I tried pressing the CMOS clear button several times and pulled the battery out for a good 10 minutes or so and no luck. I switched to the backup bios and get signal on my monitor with no problems. Any suggestions?

With the mains disconnected, a battery pull should clear both the primary and back up BIOS'.  I believe the CLR_CMOS button only works on the current selected BIOS.  Don't quote me on that though, I've not tested it. 

So where are we at??  The primary BIOS is now F10 or F10b? or is the primary now F10 and BIOS 2 is something older?

And, what BIOS rev (and which BIOS) allows your display to work and which doesn't...

This might get confusing..  LoL

If you can see the system POST and enter BIOS (but the display) goes black when windows loads, then I would look at your primary display settings and ensure PCIe is set to first, not auto.

You can also try removing the 1070 from your system and use onboard graphics to boot, then shutdown and reinstall the card and drivers.  I can't imagine a BIOS flash causing this kind of issue with a card and no display, but stranger things have happened. 

Other possible solutions.  Set BIOS switches back to dual BIOS operation and consider flashing the non-working BIOS with the one that works from the other chip.  This however would be at the bottom of my list.

So right now the main bios is on F10 (newest from TT bios beta thread) and the backup bios is on an older version - I think F5. The switch is currently set to dual bios.

Main bios (F10) = rig turns on but no signal to display from GTX 1070 or onboard

Backup bios (F5) = rig boots with no problem into Windows with GTX 1070

Off the main bios I don't see anything on my monitor but a black screen and a message that displays no signal. No POST, Gigabyte logo, nothing.

After reading the manual last night, if I understand correctly, a successful boot from the backup bios should erase and reflash the main bios chip with whatever is currently on the backup chip to "restore working order". I was up so late last night tinkering with this it's all blurred together at this point. But I swear I did that and nothing on the main bios still.

Hope this cleared up some of the confusion and thanks again for the help!

The BIOS' do not automatically replicate.  The switches just allow you to control which BIOS the system uses to start.

Can't say for certain what the issue is but the info you provided is helpful.

Things I would try:

Power down, disconnect power, press and hold power button for 10 sec to discharge flea power

Set BIOS_SW to position 1, set SB_SW to position 2

press and hold CMOS_reset button for 30 sec. Take the extra step and short the CLR_CMOS jumper (lower right-hand corner) screwdriver works great for this.  MB battery is present, but power is disconnected from board when these steps are performed.

Now perform battery pull.  Wait a few minutes.  Reinstall battery, reconnect power.  Attempt to start system.  Describe what happens?  Fans come on..  does the Debug LED change or display any information?  A0, etc?  Try to determine if the problem is isolated to the display or the BIOS itself.  Generally, if there is no activity what so ever except fans, the BIOS is corrupt.  But don't give up just yet.

At that point I would disconnect power, remove battery and remove all components..  memory, vid card and disconnect HDD.  Replace battery, reconnect power, start>  You should get 55 in the debug LED and continuous beeps.  Power off, disconnect power and install RAM.  Connect onboard video and try starting the machine.  Result?

The way they talk about DualBIOS in the manual makes it sound like it will "auto replicate".

Motherboards that support DualBIOS have two BIOS onboard, a main BIOS and a backup BIOS. Normally, the
system works on the main BIOS. However, if the main BIOS is corrupted or damaged, the backup BIOS will
take over on the next system boot and copy the BIOS file to the main BIOS to ensure normal system operation.
For the sake of system safety, users cannot update the backup BIOS manually.

Will give what you posted a shot tonight and post back the results.

Worst case scenario **knock on wood**, is it possible to reflash the main bios if they are corrupt and without having a monitor?

When it comes to BIOS updates I have always lived with not touching it unless it was causing a problem. I recently upgraded to a GTX 1070 and have been having a problem where my monitor/GPU output will fall asleep if idle for around 20 minutes. It doesn't matter what the power settings are at, it still falls asleep and requires a reboot to wake it. I had been on F7 from 2013/08/05 for as long as I have owned this computer and figured maybe a BIOS update would help with the sleep/power issues. On top of Windows 10 being more connected than ever to BIOS/UEFI I decided to give it a shot.

I detached power and held the CMOS clear button for 30 seconds, shorted the jumpers, and pulled the battery and left it out for about 30 minutes. After putting it back in and powering up the machine, both the fans and hard drives spin up but nothing on the display. The debug LCD cycles from 8(super quick) - 15 - 36 - 32 - 03.

Switched to backup bios to check and booted into Windows with no problems.

Following is with BIOS_SW to position 1, SB_SW to position 2

With everything disconnected, fans start spinning up and I get 15 on the debug LCD for a few seconds before it turns off. Turns back on again for a few, showing 15, and then turns off. Just keeps doing that cycle. I have no speaker attached.

With just the RAM in, the debug LCD cycles from 8(super quick) - 15 - 36 - 32 - 03.
Nothing on monitor when trying to boot from main bios over DP and DVI with onboard graphics.
Switched to backup BIOS and system boots just fine over DP and DVI with onboard graphics.

Added back in my dedicated GPU.

Safe to say the main BIOS became corrupt?
Would it be smart to do a Ctrl-F12 on bootup to copy over the backup BIOS to the main BIOS?

Good work.  I see you've done a lot of reading as well.  I came across some of the same articles.  Yes, I'd try the ctrl+F12 method (BIOS2 to BIOS1).  I'd ensure you have a back up of any important data before proceeding.

So I did some more reading and now I'm not sure if it's ctrl+f10 or ctrl+f12. Do you know which it is? I'm afraid to do the wrong one and mess it all up.

Your board has an AMI BIOS so according to the threads, ctrl+F10.   ..F12 is for AWARD BIOS. 

Hold ctrl+F10 when you see the Gigabyte logo.  People recommend a wired keyboard.  Like most things BIOS..  timing is everything.  Many here will be interested in your results, including myself.    Good luck.

Won't let me edit my own post but anyways, now looks I need to do an Alt+F10 on boot to copy my main to backup. THEN hopefully be able to update my main since I will have a functioning backup.
