Hi Rob...Yeh I always have one 80g hard drive for the O.S, but I read a few bad stories about SSD.   Do you know of any good reports on any special make...coz this sporran gets heavy after picking up all the loose change the kids drop.

Hi Jannie, I run a 256Gb Corsair Performance SSD as my boot drive. They are definitely the way forward but there is still a long way to go yet. The speed increase especially in the larger ones is terrific but so is the price.  On the smaller ones again the read speed is very fast but the write speed isn't as fast. The down side really is that you need one that will ustilise TRIM and GC for it to stay fast. Your controller must also be compatible to pass these commands onto the drive(TRIM). The best thing to do is google them and do some reading up. Any questions I will do my best to answer.

One more important thing I just realised that I forgot to mention is data security. If you are using a magnetic disk drive and the controller goes belly up it is still possible to recover your data from the drive litterally bit by bit if necessary. This is not possible on a Solid State Drive. Once damaged you must consider all the data irrecoverable.

DM, thanks for the heads up on damage and irrecoverable data possibility when using SSD's.  I've patiently waiting for prices to drop, and I am still waiting.  After doing lots of reading, I kinda like the Intel 80GB SSD.  Lots of good reports on that model.  Have you had any experience with it and if yes, care to share your thoughts?

Hi Soar. The knowledge I have on the Intel offering is second hand I am afraid but I have only heard good things about them. They are the fastest (at the moment) on the market and have all the necessary extras ie TRIM, GC. The only problem is they are also the most expensive I think

Thanks for the heads up.  It is still hovering around $200 here in the USA.  I am hoping it will drop lower soon.

They are starting to become more mainstream every day so the trend of price decreases has got to be ongoing. They are also much cheaper to build that magnetic drives so they should drop considerably. Imagine your machine with a dozen SSDs in....silent heaven and cool

Well the newer Corsair H70 has been getting some very good reviews, maybe this would be a good choice.

But to my mind you can't beat the Noctua range. I have the Noctua NH-D14 so I'm going to be in favour of this. Yes, it's big but, boy is it efficient & almost silent, however the H70 did seem to beat it in one review I read. http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=25823

The only downside to buying in at the bottom end of the market size wise is that the write speeds suffer tremendously. Between the 80Gb and the 256Gb there is roughly a tripling of speed for the writes. The reads don't alter much at all across the range.

Ace, I did check the H70 out online and you are right, it appears to be an awesome set up.  I'm still kickin' it around in my mind...the cost is still a little high for me....
