Weird GA-P67A-UD7-B3 USB problem

Hello to all! I have encountered a weird problem with my computer today! Actually i never knew that there was this kind of error in windows! Windows keep notifying me that there is a power surge on hub port (the USB 3.0 one that is controlled from the Renesas chip) and at this very moment i am writing this post the balloon keeps popping up!

I have restarted the computer several times but the problem persists! The weirdest thing though is that i have no device connected to the USB 3.0 ports! The only thing that's connected on a usb port is the mouse and it is connected on the USB 2.0 ports at the back panel of the motherboard! Anyway i use the reset option on the window that pops up but after a while there's a new warning regarding the same problem!

I'm using F3 BIOS and everything is working at stock speeds, no overclock or other stuff! On the following picture you can see the power surge problem.

Motherboard: GA-P67A-UD7-B3 (F3 BIOS)
CPU: Intel i7 2600k
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x 4 gb @ 1600 MHz 8-8-8-24
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS 9900 MAX
GPU: Gainward GTX570 Golden Sample
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 500 gb SATA 3 (WD5002AALX-00J37A0) for windows and programs
         Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 Tb SATA 2 (WD15EADS-00P8B0) for storage
Optical Drives: NEC Optiarc DVD-RW AD-7261S

I hope this isn't a motherboard problem coz i'm gonna kill myself!

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I would suggest checking the USB3.0 connector blocks on the motherboard for any shorting pins etc. They will be at the bottom of the mobo. The same in the USB3.0 ports on the rear of the I/O plate. Make sure there is no foreign body in them whioch could cause a short.

Apart from that it would sound like a motherboard failure. You could of course just disable in the BIOS the USB3.0 ports if you don't intend to use them.

I've checked the backplate and it seems there's nothing wrong. I will check the pins on the motherboard later.

I don't plan to use the USB 3.0 ports but c'mon i bought this motherboard just a month ago (12/04) and it starts falling apart? I mean when you buy something new you want everything to work like charm otherwise why buying it in the first place?

Anyway do you think it might be a drivers problem? Because last night i've installed some audio/video codecs and i thought there was some kind of conflict.

Should i RMA the board?

I totally agree with you regarding the purchase. You expect to get a perfect item when you buy it new. It was just a suggestion.

Could well be a driver or BIOS issue. In fact I would think that is more likely than a faulty board. You could try going back to a restore point before the new codecs were installed and see if the problem is still there.

I've checked the pins on the motherboard and i didn't find any issue!  I used a can of compressed air to clean the ports on the back panel and the pins on the motherboard! I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the Renesas drivers but the problem is still there! I will format and get a fresh Windows 7 installation as soon as my new HDD arrives.

I dropped by the reseller where i purchased the mobo and had a little chit chat about the problem. He told me that if the mobo is faulty we can RMA it but i must be sure that's faulty! I don't know if this is a Gigabyte policy here in Italy or the reseller is lousy but if there's a problem shouldn't Gigabyte replace the faulty hardware right away?

I'm having the same problem except mine only started once I installed the Renesas drivers. For the month or so that I was using the generic win7 drivers I didn't have the problem.

It's also strange that if I disable then re-enable the hub the error message doesn't reappear.

I just had a fresh Windows 7 Ultimate 64 installation installed the newest Renesas USB drivers and everything until now is ok! No power surge errors, no usb3 problems everything works like a charm! I hope it lasts! Thank you all for your replies and your help!

Just built a new machine, and had this issue after just 2 days. Balloon kept popping up over and over again with that stupid power surge message, and 'Unknown USD Device' even when I unplugged my only USB device (mouse).

I updated to the latest Renesas controller firmware and drivers, but that didn't help. Finally I did a CMOS reset, and that fixed the issue for now.

I'm going to disable the renasas controllers in the BIOS. I don't want to have to do CMOS resets regularly. Great problem to be having with the flagship board...

Hi

When updating the Renesas drivers make sure that you uninstal the original ones first. This will help stop problems associated with this.

Keep an eye open for a new BIOS as that will probably address this issue.

Don't forget that although you haven't got any USB devices apart from your mouse attached you probably still have hubs built into other components.

I don't think there are any more hubs in my system. The only components are GTX 580, Titanium HD, RAM and Intel 320 SSDs... The only hubs are the two VLI VL810 on the damned UD7. I hope they release the BIOS fix sooner rather than later.

Yeah, that's the one I installed.

Note that the UD7 has two Renesas D720200 controllers and the updater will give an error about plural devices. You have do disable controller one in the BIOS to flash the other (do them one at a time).
