Has USB3.0 of X58A-UD3R (Rev. 1.0) any problem?

Has USB3.0 of X58A-UD3R (Rev. 1.0) any problem?
« on: September 21, 2010, 08:31:11 pm »
Just bought a Hotway Probox 3.5" USB3.0 HDD Enclosure. It's connected to the USB3.0 port of Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (Rev. 1.0). The system detects the HDD enclosure and installs the driver successfully. However, the harddisk in the enclosure is not seen at My Computer. The OS of my system is Windows XP Pro 32-bit. The harddisk in the enclosure is Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB (WD10EADS-65M2B0).

Troubleshooting done so far:

[1] Test both USB3.0 ports on the UD3R and the problem is not solved.

[2] I can hear that the HDD in the USB3.0 HDD enclosure spins when the power is on.

[3] The Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB has no problem because it can be seen in the My Computer when it's installed in another USB2.0 HDD enclosure.

[4] The USB3.0 controller in the BIOS is enabled.

[5] The cable is USB3.0 cable and the length is about 1m.

Kindly advise if there is anything setting that I miss out to enable a USB3.0 device to work properly with the UD3R.

Thanks.

Hi onemilimter. It is funny because only today I had the first question regarding USB3 connection and it was with the same enclosure you are using. That OPs drive wouldn't work either. I just got this funny feeling of deja vu. I hope this isn't the start of another epic thread. I always wondered if after the SATA3 and CPU sockets whether USB3 would perform as expected so I guess we are about to find out.  ;)

Have you installed the USB3 drivers?
Has the drive been formatted and initialised?
Does the drive power down when not trying to be used? or power up when you try to use it?
Have you tried another cable?
What happens when you hit it with a big hammer? Maybe forget the last one!

Hi Dark Mantis...

I just about to ask the USB3.0 driver as follows.

Emm... I can't remember if I has installed the "NEC USB 3.0 Driver". How to check if it has been installed? Anyway do I need it?

When the USB3.0 HDD enclosure is connected to the USB3.0 port, "Found New Hardware" appears and some driver installation takes place. But I can't see the HDD in My Computer.

By the way, does the guy use the same USB3.0 HDD external and has he solved the problem?

I think you got me mixed up with that rich geezer absic. I can't afford a USB3 drive enclosure so I am expecting you guys to smooth the way before I do.
Yes you do need to install the USB3 drivers otherwise it will just revert to USB2. You can check to see if they are installed in Device Manager/USB Controllers/NEC USB etc

Have you installed the USB3 drivers?
I think the NEC USB3.0 driver is not installed yet. I will install it and see if it helps.

Has the drive been formatted and initialised?
Yes. It's been used with another USB2.0 HDD enclosure without any problem.

Does the drive power down when not trying to be used? or power up when you try to use it?
As I can't see HDD in My Computer, I've not chance to use it. However when it's used with another USB2.0 HDD enclosure it will power down when it's not used.

Have you tried another cable?
Nope because the is the only USB3.0 cable I have. It comes with the USB3.0 HDD enclosure.

What happens when you hit it with a big hammer? Maybe forget the last one!
Well... my hammer is too small to give an impact on it... :)

Under Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus controllers:
Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller
Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Root Hub

Consider installed, I guess. Then, what's the problem? Why the system does not see the HDD?

It's just there have been a couple of cases where the problem was that the metal part of the plug wasn't long enough to makle a proper connection with the enclosure, pins to short I guess.

Use a bigger hammer....do I have to do all the thinking around here!

Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller

On my computer it says NEC Electronics USB3 Host Controller which is what I would expect as it is a NEC chip. I don't understand why yours is different.

No it wasn't absic who had the other USB3 problem I was just joking about him. ;) It was someone today though.

USB3.0 device should be backward compatible. I connect the USB3.0 HDD enclosure to a USB2.0 port using the USB3.0 cable and it does not work. To see if it's due to cable problem then I connect the USB3.0 HDD enclosure to a USB2.0 port using a USB2.0 cable and it also does not work. It looks to me that the problem is with the USB3.0 HDD enclosure.

Yes I would have to agree. It might be worth just checking the connections inside the case.

Is the enclosure USB powered or by seperate power supply?

It's a 3.5" HDD enclosure and thus it needs separate power supply.

Fair enough although technically the Gigabyte motherboard will supply enough power through the USB3 port to run it no problem.
I take it the power supply part is working ok?
